Why is it that every time I post, I seem to be picking on Gonzi? I dunno. Perhaps because the only things I reply to are the ones that really piss me off. Gonzi, the idea of pointing to someone's diary, public or not, and using that to denigrate them is just plain fucking *wrong*. Didn't your mother teach you any manners? If anyone out there does follow this link, check out the rest of the diary, and the site, while you're there. If someone's going to give you an open look into their soul, free of charge, the least you could do is get the whole story. Regardless, ozy writes things for this list that are *useful*. With the exception of his final post, his posts are well-thought-out, erudite, and informative. In short, he doesn't provide bales of fanboy ranting, off-topic posts and daily updates to a web page that anybody with a rudimentary knowledge of the Web could find. This list *is* getting worse. There's a serious lack of signal among all the noise. My heartfelt thanks to those who review albums and discuss the music. If my experience is any guide, posted reviews might have well just been dropped down a hole for all the response they garner. Back in the Good Old Days, people seemed to think that the music was worth talking about. I don't *think* the music's gotten worse, though I'd be willing to entertain the idea for the sake of discussion, so how come we never talk about it anymore? Three of my last four posts to this list have been cranky and cantankerous, and I apologize for contributing to the problem. I'll post some reviews as soon as I get some time. Replies to the first three paragraphs by e-mail, please. Jesse --- Jesse Stricker (jds19@acpub.duke.edu) http://www.duke.edu/~jds19

It's not got worse, but nothing much interesting has happened this year IMHO with the exception of SqPsh / Jega / Boards of Canada / and a few Cylob tracks. But then I haven't bought many records this year. Which is sad. g.

I wish I could have a Jega, it sounds interesting. Much more interesting, in fact, than most of the records I have bought this year have turned out to be in the long run. I believe that the music is stagnating a bit, and this is just trickling down to the list. If there were things worth reviewing, I'd bet people woud review them. If there was more music to focus on, I'm certain the focus would return to the music. Currently, however, there are just not that many exciting new releases to talk about. Even the recent Rephlex overactivity has been largely ignored because most of it consists of reissues. I'm sure things will change. Hopefully soon. Have faith everyone...

I think there are a lot of good things to review that are new or haven't been discussed yet. In the last order we did, we got the new Advent- Shaded Elements, Muzik Master with Dave Clarke spinning (really cool), new Planetary Assault Systems, and a lot of other stuff. I guess that I've just been a lazy bastard, not reviewing stuff lately. Other stuff that we are getting in, are Carl Craig's - Bug In the Bassbin remixes on Mo Wax and the original on Planet E, Digital Justice on Fragile, The new DJ Shadow full length on Mo WAX, Leo Anibaldi - Void, Mark Broom - Angie is a shoplifter and a Whole bunch of other stuff that I am spacing out on right now. Someone did mention earlier that this list is usually devoted to mostly to Warp/Rephlex product. I for one usually love that stuff, but I also like a great deal of other stuff. I guess I only talk about certain on this list and other things on others. Maybe other people are doing this also, and we should expand the variety a little more. I am interested in hearing a little more on good Drum nBass/Minimal/detroit, etc On Now: Angular Art (it's the bomb!) B i l l S a m u e l s w l s @ U . A r i z o n a . E D U

That is sad, truly. But then, it isn't New Years Eve tomorrow, right. Btwelve's 'Time Tourist' made my winter. And don't forget the Electro-renaissance made possible by Clear. Jedi Knights, Gescom, Plaid... But it's true, there hasn't been too many good album released this year. I think it's the Goa-trance shit that is poisoning the scene. Will Autechre save us this year too? I bet they'll releaase an 80-minutes jupiter album on the 31th of December. Fredric

I was feeling a bit musically distraught this year as well, until I picked up Blue's _Mexican Church_, Spooky's _Found Sound_, and Hosono's _N.D.E._. I attribute some of the letdown to the prolific ones -- let's face it, Kirk, Paradinas, and A. Heart are simply repeating themselves. And so are some of the labels.

If there were things sc> worth reviewing, I'd bet people woud review them. I'm basically lazy about reviewing records. I really need to be MOVED before I get the urge to describe what I hear. In the case of Jega and Locust it come naturally, but basically I just cannot find the words to describe what I hear. I mean it's all very well to say that the bass line is wicked, that the drums are in such-or-such intricate patterns, or that the melody in the background reminds me of molten cheese ... but what does that contribute? sc> If there was more music to focus on, I'm certain the focus would sc> return to the music. Currently, however, there are just not sc> that many exciting new releases to talk about. I did buy a lot of new stuff this year, but ... I have yet to hear the album that does it ALL. Just listened to Single Cell Orchestra which I bought last month. Never heard of them (him?) before and wasn't absolutely overwhelmed when I heard it first, but there was 'something' about it that made me buy it. In parts it sounds sickly sweet and almost ancient, the girly noises put me off, but the rhythms and drum rolls are real nice ... I think it moves me, but I couldn't tell you /why/ I like this particular album. Maybe it's the strangely haunting background melodies? Helen OnNow: As One - Mihara
