Hey guys, I am sorry to continue this thread especially since I have not seen AMP, maybe I have no right to voice my opinion. However, this post is exactly right on. We shouldn't give praise to Mtv. I haven't seen all the videos as I said, but I know in times past you could find IDM videos for yourselves if you looked hard enough. The AI videos were good (not the greatest) for example. The Xmix videos are a great idea as well, as were the Alien DreamTime things, and so forth. Yes, there must be tons of others out there! I once saw an Aphex video on an independent local station. (Teletunes for you Coloradans). We should be careful to give MTV such praise. Hasn't kistory taught us anything about MTV? Why do you think the created a second Mtv channel to begin with? More airtime= more money. Homey the Clown had it right man. If the little shits watching Mtv after they get home high school fall in love with IDM the next thing you'll see is IDM at your local Kmart or Target stores. Don't start a flame on this one folks, it can happen and you know it! The videos may be cool and your opinions about them are great, but watch out about what Mtv is attempting to do. my .02cents, gmv500@earthlink.net From: Tijohnson@vassar.edu (tiffany) Date: Mon, 09 Sep 1996 18:36:10 -0500 Subject: (idm) MTV RANT On September 9th FreyGuy quoted:

Hello all, It's wonderful (sarcasm here) that MTV executives are aware of how crappy the deal is, but this woman! How does she live with herself?! How condescending to assume that people need to be told how to define themselves! That's not true at all. I don't care how "stupid" people are (or MTV thinks they are), there is no way MTV can justify the claim that they're providing a &^*&@#@ service to the people. If anything, I think it's all the more evil that MTV knows exactly what it is doing. All this while I had the notion that MTV did know, but wasn't quite sure. So, now they want to find another audience to market their goods to (they've realized that there are "intelligent" people in the world that don't appreciate being led by the nose) and so are feeding the pretty little egos of people with more "complex" musical tastes by creating a special channel for them (or special shows). The whole thing is pitiful. People's relationship with music shouldn't be like this. I don't care if MTV tries to impress me with it's airing of obscure videos, it's still MTV. I don't feel comfortable watching a channel based on the sick philosophy that music should be used to provide ready-made identities for those that can't get one on their own. They are not thinking of the music or the artists or the listeners, they are thinking of their pocketbooks. It's great that these videos are being made and also aired to a larger audience, but at what price? Do we really want to encourage MTV to approprate yet another part of culture and water it down? There has to be another way to view these videos that doesn't involve kissing the butts of MTV executives. I don't know, maybe my views are unreasonable, impractical and just plain paranoid, I'm certainly open to criticism. I just don't trust MTV. I don't believe that they have the integrity necessary to promote IDM (or anything, for that matter) in a way that is beneficial for anyone not participating in their little agenda (which includes me). I think there would have had to have been at least some partial nudity in the Aphex video in order for it to catch the eye of the average MTV viewer. I mean, come on man, it don't even got no singing, it must be some dumb movie soundtrack music like Axel F or something.. DUH! As for Autechre, it's got as much chance as being top40 as the Mindphaser video from Front Line Assembly had.. it was on heavy rotation on Muchmusic for months and I haven't seen Bill Leeb on the cover of Bop yet. Ha! Cid.

It's already happened over here. Relax, it's not so bad. And it means that some of the artists can get some money: I've never had any sympathy with the "Vincent van Gogh" approach of depriving artists for the good of their souls. They need to pay the rent, after all. Cheers, Andrew. OnNow: "In Sides"

No she isn't. This kind of childish foaming at the mouth is boring. Or funny, I can't decide which. I thought we already had the "it's our sacred music" discussion. It's done. The videos were great, the show was fun, Mtv is what it is. Watch it or don't watch it. But this fascist "you must not enjoy Mtv, you must hate them, you must, you must" is as obnoxious as the very funny statement by the woman at Mtv claiming "we tell people how to be cool..." People don't need Mtv to tell them how to be cool, they've been force-feeding it to eachother since elementary school... Actually, my belief is that Aphex Twin:2006 as Sonic Youth:1996. In other words, he'll be seen as the curmudgeonly grandfather of once-dismissed form of music that went on the complete saturate the airwaves, and that all right-thinking people will be absolutely bored of by then. This may be tangential to your point, but since I kept seeing references such as the above, I made a point of listening to the supposedly good Sonic Youth albums (ie not the latest ones), and I think they are highly overrated - but then that's not surprising since there wasn't much else during those years that was any better. If you went back in a time machine, and prevented Sonic Youth from forming, I don't think you'd affect 1996 in any negative way. I think the ultimate musical effect of Aphex Twin is significantly greater.
