Hi folks, DJ Spooky will be over here in Belgium for a liveshow plus DJ set. The flyer says : mix of hiphop, ethno and ambient. I've seen the name passing a few times on the idm list, but I haven't heard any of his stuff. Can someone inform me what exactly his releases soundlike and if it's a worthy liveshow to see ? Thanks, dv8

Upon listening to his full length release, "Songs of a Dead Dreamer", you will fully understand the position of musical expenditure that Dj Spooky tha subliminal kid is capable of. To put it bluntly, I fucking love this album. I listened to it for the first time in my car on a lengthy ride up north. When song 4 kicked in, and then the transition ensued to the string groove, I was in full on rockin' mode. Right then and there I knew this album was for me. Between songs, you will find what the Black Dog call "bolt(s)", and what the Future Sound of London rely on to keep their more abstract listeners focussed. The influence is clear -- which is brilliant in my opinion. Spooky incorporates these abstract meanderings into full on grooves; this album is a journey in every sense of the word. I suggest you undertake his journey in both senses of the word; the album(which is available to everyone) and more exclusively, the live show which you have the opportunity to attend. You will not be disappointed with either choice. just some thoughts.... _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_- J A M E S B E N J A M I N G I L L J G I L L @ U . A R I Z O N A . He calls his syle "Illibent" and was described as "John Coltrane of the turntables" by one (highbrow) critic , pick of his cd's is the "Songs of a Dead Dreamer" , which is all programmed and played by Spooky, yet is structured like a DJ set. Moves in sections from beatless sound collages to funky hip hop breaks to expansive dub - like sounscapes , even includes a drum'n'bass track , all the sounds are very subtle intelligently constructed - even though the booklet is a tad pretentious! I have heard his spinning is all flash and no substance with sloppy scratching and sub standard drum'n'bass - but will reserve judgement until have seen myself , but I would suggest you check it out for a look at an artist who is definatly making a difference. sm@ 4th world reecords uk http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/4thworld
