APHEX TWIN GOES POP AND SINGS
THE Aphex Twin is set to release a new single 'Girl/Boy' which according
to those in the know,
(i.e. Richard James himself) is a tub-thumping pop single destined for
Number One status. There
are five other songs on the release including two tracks, 'The Milkman
Song' and 'Beatles Under
My Carpet', on which The Aphex Twin sings. So is this an alarming pop
direction for the Aphex
Twin? "Could be. I've already released some pop singles under some alter
ego's. I've kept them
secret," says The Twin. "My friend who's lying down next to me said, 'You
can't make a decent
pop tune.' I said, 'I can, easy.'" How would Richard James characterise
his singing voice? "Early
Paul McCartney. Bit better.. Not loads better. It's a bit tender." One
track is called 'Beatles Under
My Carpet'. How did he get the idea for that? "We've got loads of beetles
here - they come out
when it's hot. We've got pigeons under our bath, I think they emanate from
there. When you have
a bath you can hear the pigeons scrape along the bottom. It's like they're
in the bath with you...
We're about to be evicted - we've got problems with the environmental
health - it's too noisy. Our
neighbours have broken our windows with stones. It makes it hard to
concentrate when you're
trying to make music. There might be a full on scrap here soon..." Could
he confirm that he was
recently seen at a Squarepusher gig throwing bread rolls at him? "It was a
jacket potato," corrects
Aphex. "We were shouting 'Frankie Foncett' at him. That name is just
ridiculous. I don't know
who he is, a house geezer or something, but it's just ridiculous... I
can't express myself properly."
Whatever. Aphex Twin has confirmed he will be playing live at Universe's
Big Love 2 at Otmoor
Park in Oxfordshire on September 28th. 'Girl/Boy' is out October 14th on Warp.
