Sorry to disappoint you but THERE ARE NONE!!! Your best bets are: Aron's Records on Highland just above Santa Monica in Hollywood: used to have everything until their import buyer Tomas moved to San Francisco- now it sucks. Sometimes you get lucky though... There are a few rather pathetic dance music stores that don't particularly cater to IDMers but you can try them anyway- you just may find something. They are all in the same area. Street Sounds: on Melrose just east of Fairfax DMC: a few blocks more to the East on Melrose-- the best of the three in my opinion because they have their inventory on computer and generally know what they have. Beat Non-Stop: even more to the East on Melrose, almost to La Brea. Good luck finding anything. I am constantly amazed by the lack of good music stores in a city as large as LA. I have actually contemplated opening up a record shop to fill this gaping void. Sadly enough, you are almost more likely to find something at the Virgin megastore on Sunset and Crescent Heights than you are at an independent store. Anyone else know of some clandestine operation that I'm forgetting and/or don't know about? On Wed, 7 Aug 1996 12:35:55 -0400 (EDT) Nathanel Karl Harrison <nateh@orchard.washtenaw.cc.mi.us> wrote:

i'll let you in on my little local secret... rhino on westwood blvd (just north of santa monica) sometimes gets a good trickle of some decent IDM and related stuff...and can certainly special order... the trick is to not go there and be looking for something in particular, but to just be open to what you might find. they also have excellent world, jazz, indie rock and oddities so you might get something you never bargained for. for example, i went and traded some cds the other day and left with the following: in order to dance vol. 6 - drum-n-bass (r+s) (on wax) herbert - 100 lbs (phono) genius/gza - liquid swords and hermann/hitchcock - partnership in terror (prague philharmonic doing all the hitchcock greats, from marnie to psycho) if you end up going up to sf, visit open mind on divisadero -- the buyer from aron's is now there so you'll feel like you're in old-school aron's heaven. :) ____ Hug Your Waistline to the Bassline Tamara Palmer trance@netcom.com Women Respond to Bass

If you want to know my thoughts on the local record stores check out the reviews I wrote for rotator locator on hyperreal. I think the address is http://www.hyperreal.com/music/rotator but don't hold me to it. Anyhow, you can get there from hyperreal.com/music . LA doesn't 'suck' that much I suppose. You just have to do alot more work and get to know buyers and keep on top of them. It's alot of phone work 'did it come in today?' 'no...' and alot of fustration at times but no place is perferct (except maybe London). /""'' /"'RESH Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA

Hi all, This is my first post to IDM (I've been lurking for a month or two) and I'm really sorry that my first post is going to be a little pissed off. The problem is that my fave record store has been dissed and dissed hard. I'll try to make this informative also... first off a little background: I'm an "ambient/jungle/triphop/breakbeat/techno/IDM" DJ in LA, in short I love to spin everything (but house, sorry). I've been a resident downstairs at Magic Wednesdays since almost the start, spin at the Ambient Lounge occasionaly and generaly just having a lot of fun. By day I'm a 3D animator at a F/X house doing graphics for games and tv shows. I love music and therefore spend a lot of time searching, which brings us to the original question, where to find cool shit in LA... AAron's records: 1150 N. Highland Ave. Hollywood 213.469.4700 Which contrary to popular belief, does not suck...I'm there every other day picking up shit. I won't go as far as to tell you what I've found at Aarons but i'll just say that for the last 2 years, I've found 75% of the new IDM release on my wish list and much more! Yes Tomas is gone, then Jun(e?) took over and was doing quite well. now he's on tour and I dont know the new buyer personally, but after a bad couple of weeks, he's doing great...last week they had Plug, Cylob, Mike Flowers, etc. So there.....(as you can tell, Aarons is my favorite record shop) also with IDM, jungle and cool stuff: Groove Riders: 14566 Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks 818.981.3366 With buyers like Brian and Daniel from Moontribe and Jesse from Fresh Produce you can't go wrong...lots of good mainstream dance stuff and more. I've been ordering tons of stuff here so they may start stocking more IDM. DMC records: on Melrose between Fairfax and La Brea lots of good old stuff but you have to spend some time digging...mostly house heads so they dont buy what we would jump on. Found many limited pressing over a year after they came out. Also loads of techno. Worth a look if you have some time. Ask for Casey. Street Sounds: on Melrose Between Fairfax and La Brea, further West I get a lot of electro and funky breakbeat stuff here, some jungle but not much IDM or ambient. Ask for Jimmy. Beat Non-Stop: on Melrose Between Fairfax and La Brea, further East mostly house, very small ambient/IDM section...worth a look while on Melrose...they had 3 copies of Simmons/Vibert last time I went in. These are the shops I frequent and there are many, many more: Prime cuts, Dr freeclouds mixing lab, Rockaway records, No-Life records... Well that's nuff said...LA doesn't suck and with exception of London, I haven't found anywhere that offered as many quality choices for music buying. sorry for the long post, but I was sooo pissed, I was seeing red! I'd like to extend the invite to anyone coming to LA area to please drop me e-mail. I would love to hang out, spin records and show a good time to any IDMers out there...we are all in this together! peace out, brock

I too am a first time poster to the IDM list(after lurking for several months) . I too have been a regular at arons for a while now, but lately they have been striking out pretty hard. I don't know if they have stopped ordering what I want or are selling out before I get there. Last time I went there, the only thing on my wish list that I could find was drum 'n bass for papa on vinyl. no cylob, no mu-ziq, no kinesthesia, no jega. It has been like this the last few times I have been there. I hate to say it, but I found more when I went to the big tower on sunset. They had bluff limbo, mike and rich, and the new plug album on cd. I used to find everything I wanted when I went to arons, but recently have found very little there. I hope things change there, because it was the only store in town that seemed to do a good job stocking IDM, and I certainly dont want to be forced to wait several weeks hoping that it might show up at tower(yuck). -tIM

San Francisco/Berkeley is a lot more perfect. Perhaps I was spoiled when I lived up there but I never had any problem finding things. It is just very surprising that such an enormous city has so few places to buy good music. For the person who was fervently defending Aron's (there's only one A in Aron's, by the way), I may still think it was a decent record store if not for the fact that it was once a great record store-- now the prices are higher than the Virgin Megastore and they only get one or two copies of each IDM release-- not nearly enough for the number of people who are seeking them out. Yes, I find stuff there sometimes but it is always weeks after the release. I have yet to find Cylob there or anywhere else in LA. You must have already purchased the one copy they ordered.
