I don't have the time or energy for a proper review, but I got Chimera 'Valley of the Spirits' last week and would be interested in hearing other's opinions. This is by Kosmik Kommando, and it sounds a little like Speedy J, and a whole lot like a dutch guy who listens to a lot of Detroit record. There is a lot of 303 and 101 one bar loops throughout, but the 303 lines are fairly restrained. It's amazing how few people seem to realize that the 303 resonance knob can be set to values less than eleven. It's very pleasant stuff, but it doesn't have that certain "What the Fuck is That?" quality for which I prize Rephlex releases. It strikes me more as a record that would come out on Peacefrog than Rephlex. --------------------------------------------------------------------- "I read Keyboard, but it's like staring at a book with pictures of simple looking but expensive machines." -- Michael Lazarev NEW CD Comp Electronic Music Project http://soli.inav.net/~kent/emp.html Kent Williams kent@inav.net CADSI 2651 Crosspark Road Coralville IA 52241 (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

2nd only to that Mike and Rich catastrophe in the "quickest Rephlex in and out of my collection" category. Mediocrity and rephlex just don't play. Teep<--Getting his licks in before he goes on vacation.

Hrmgh..Chimera is a good album, but then I really liked the Kosmik Kommando album too. I agree about the mike and rich abomination though. second only to the squarepusher album in the list of Rephlex albums I listened to in store, disliked, and didn't buy....and I've bought and liked almost everything Rephlex has ever released. I've learned to listen before buying now...too many labels and artists who have produced such wonderful music in the past are letting me down these days. Where are the "Electronic Highways" and "G-Spots" of the world anymore? T.

Chimera is actually a pretty good album, just not what you'd expect from Rephlex. If it had come out on Peacefrog, the people that go wobbly for Peacefrog would be pumping it to no end. I actually like Mike & Rich, with the exception of the belching track. And Squarepusher, well you're entitled to your opinion, but me like that as well.

I can't imagine why people seem to get so down on Mike & Rich, I think it's great. I know people where probably expecting an hour of Ventolinesque ear torture, but what's wrong with a little easy listening excursion? If it had been released 2 years ago when it had been recorded it wounded have been much more timely, coming at the start of the easy listening revival. Some of the loops are quite original and who among us doesn't need a little variety? For a nice evening, pop Mike & Rich, Moog Indigo, The new Jake S., a little Esquivel, a Gentle People cd, and some Money Mark into the changer and watch what happens. Just the thing for your next swinging cocktail party, and the ladies love it... /""'' /"'RESH Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA
