Just got a copy of the forthcoming CD by Console -- "Rocket in the Pocket" -- from Matador Records (this may have been licensed from Payola, not sure). Apparently it's the guy from Notwist... Anyway, on first listen, it's some really nice stuff -- elements of some early IDM heroes, a little bit o' Bochum Welt & some vintage synth fetishism... Matador's obviously trying to score another Boards of Canada here, and while I'm not sure it's quite on that level, there's definitely plenty of nu-nu-wave melody to keep the kids happy. Really well produced, lots of textural nuance, and some darned addictive breaks. Keep yr eyes peeled. hmmm, too bad that console's "rocket..." was one of my fave electronic releases of '98! oh well, at least matador are jumpin' on the modernist bandwagon a bit quicker with the up coming north american release of the "explosion" record! guess this is gonna be the trend from now on... "indie" labels (aka matador) licensing/signing "electronic" artists (boc, console, modernist, etc...) and "electronic" labels (warp) licensing/signing "indie" artists (tortoise, godspeed..., mogwai, etc...)?! these bigger labels must be gettin' tired! my 2 cents, lb --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This is the same Console who did 'Pan or ama', right? That ep/album/whatever is really nice, but to an extent one of those releases I never feel a great urge to listen to. Does 'Rocket in the Pocket' compare? I wonder if people are missing these releases cos they're coming out on labels that get billed as something other than electronics. Payola (the label who did the original release) are normally considered part of that "neu-Kraut" scene, being tied in with the Hausmusik gang. Still, a lot of the releases at least have plenty of electronics in them, and 'Pan or ama' was entirely electronic.. replete with some little 'Garbage'-era Autechre ricky-ricky percussion on one of the tracks. Actually, are Hausmusik, Payola and Kollaps all run by the exact same people? They certainly have a single web site, and what I can make of the info doesn't dispel any suggestions they might be.
