Photek - The Hidden Camera (virgin/caroline)
four tracks of wonderfully dark and paranoid jazzy d'n'bish stuff. it's
actually pretty interesting to me that most of the beats are barely
junglish. only the last track really has that spastic jungle whirr. the
others are more like jazz drumming, sort of. very cool, very original.
big up.
Plug - Drum N Bass For Papa (blue angel)
Quite good, actually. Vibert keeps the cheese to a minimum, using it for
flavoring rather than making it the heart of the tracks. Beat programming
is great. Production is clean and effective. Most of the tracks have a
deft jazzy touch with that 60's feel that seems to be so popular nowadays.
I like it. And of course you have to love a track that samples Barton
Fink. ("Life Of The Mind")
Auntie Aubrey's Excursions Beyond The Call Of Duty (deviant)
Absolute most annoying packaging in the history of CDs. The booklet is
nice although it could probably be half the size and still contain the same
amount of material. But the music... Well, I only had a few of these
tracks previously, so I am well pleased. Some absolutely wonderful Orb
moments in here. Disc One is more on the ambient/wacked out tip with
tracks like the marathon 18 minute Killing Joke tribal freak out frenzy and
Keiichi Suzuki's Satellite Serenade (so beautiful even after a million
spins). Disc Two is more on the dancefloor/pop tip with housey beats in
the Sun Electric Orbital Therapy and lots of breakbeats in remixes for
Depeche Mode, Erasure, Pop Will Eat Itself, Time Unlimited...
