"Music Journalist" says it all, basically. If you review in any trade rags,
basically you suck. Kinda bugs me that people think that they can write
what they think about a record and call it criticism (*real* criticism means
that you actually investigate EVERYTHING you can about what went into the
creation process and figure out what the thing ultimately has to say), and
then think that they are special people within the music field, entitled to
something more than those of us who must work for a living. Well, I like
the recent Seasons album by Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon very much.
There's my criticism, short and sweet just like J D Considine -- so ...
please cough up your pile of CD's, but you can keep the ones that suck which
surely must be most of them. I've got a bit of cash that I worked for, so
I'm entitled to them, aren't I? =)
Seriously though ... I'd like to point out that a review isn't just one
listen and then you decide whether you like it or not based on that. You've
got to know a little bit about whom you're writing rather than just saying
yeh I like it, and calling it a review. Most of the shit you read in the
mags and papers that try to go in that direction are just that -- shit. And
99 times out of 100 they didn't bother to sit through the whole thing, be it
a movie or a record or a TV show, and so on. These people have too much
stuff to consume as it is -- they're not going to get into it as deeply as
most of us who talk about our favorites here. One to six plays tops for
them, constant listening for us. Bollux 2 them ... reading this list does
more for telling me what's good and what I might like over any fucked up
review or radio program (with a management-enforced playlist, or a freeform
DJ who plays his own record collection). And even this list is sometimes
fulla shit.
Consider this -- music journalists are responsible for creating that old
rock 'n' roll myth by constantly writing about it -- so if you ever run into
another one of those grunge pansies who think K Cobain was God, think about
where he must have gotten that idea.

Now after all that bitching here's my own non-review: Actually I like this
disc better than the originals ... not because it's Emerson and Paterson,
but because I like the mix. It's not the greatest mix I've heard (most of
it's coast-to-coast), but it's enough to keep me paying attention to the
disc for 2.5 hours around dawn without doing anything else. And I figure
the whole genre isn't heard properly unless it's mixed (that's what most of
the music is created for isn't it?) ... so cheers for this one. Wish the
originals were mixed.
