This was my first IDM night so I was not sure what to expect. When I finally got there after getting lost in London, I was greeted by the Boards of Canada (I presume). Their music seemed to have fairly basic rhythmic structure and I couldn't really get into it with this little exposure. Next on was two guys I didn't recognise but from the order of play I guessed they were Panasonic. They had some sort of oscilloscope projection that they were tweaking and then they started playing... =:-O FUCKING HELL!!! I was in a numbed state of ecstasy for however long their set was, I lost track of time. It was totally different to the previous guys. I had an idea of what Panasonic would be like but they turned out to be everything I could have ever hoped for. Just droning tones gradually changing in pitch so amazing overtones were produced that reverberated throughout the venue. Sometimes a mutation of a beat was brought in and it all fitted perfectly. I loved seeing the actual waves on the screen. Much better than just a film in my opinion. If you haven't checked Panasonic yet, then you're seriously missing out. I think Autechre were on next, and by the sound of their intro, I thought they were going to play a version of the second track of their Peel session (one of my favourites) but it turned out to be a new track (as was all the music I heard). Their whole set was pretty hard (like Second bad Vilbel) and the tracks went on for ages. This definitely helped since I had never heard them before. Was anyone else on this list there? It seemed like they played about four tracks. Mark Broom's DJ set was another first for me. Very impressive techno (is it called hardbeat?) and I finally didn't feel out of place dancing to the music. Cylob was up next and I was expecting him to be hard as fuck. Instead the tracks were very melodic and the drums much more traditional than Industrial Folk Songs or the Vetolin remix. I'd need to listen to them much more to enjoy them properly. Hopefully they were taken from Cylobian Sunset. Later on in his set he played some harder stuff, and I think the people there were really getting into it. Some nutters were going insane dancing to it. I prefer to just listen, it's hectic enough without dancing IMO. The volume was turned way up the whole night and about half the people there had ear plugs. Even cylob, mr noisy himself, had his fingers in his ears during the louder parts. It'l probably be another two days before I can start to hear treble properly. Overall, I was very impressed. Anyone have any dates for Mike Paradinas? Cheers -Ed

Tonnes of fucking good music I hope.

They were ace. Read Jega meets Human League. Eighties synth pop with distorted hip-hop breaks and without crap vocals, one awesome track two excellent tracks and a few too many noodly links between tracks. EP out on SKAM soon which the SKAMeisters say is even better than the stuff I heard. They have a white floating about now which they put out themselves - I must acquire. Rumour has it that they've been approached by none other than Rephlex... Venue was good too btw well out of the way hidden on the fourth floor of a student union but nice size, dark seating bits round edges and totally totally loud. And cheap bar too. Crowd was ok but a bit urm static and 90% male which is a characteristic perculiar to techno nights London I have found. Too many journalists as well. But I think that about all nights in London. (Not that I have anything against London, understand).

Yeah they were shit hot but this was very different Panasonic to the stuff I have previously heard (Vakio and other stuff). Oscilloscope bit was mad as was the set which was hard as nails building to an almost white noise cresendo... Super impressive, I'd wondered what they would do live and was not disappointed.

Indeed they were but I'd popped out for a leak and was a bit distracted, thought Broom was on and was making a mental note to ask him what his first (awesome) tune was when I saw S&R onstage - no joke.

yup.

nup. three. one of Ae's best live sets IMHO, capturing the banging Vapre ness with spine tingling Ae bits totally convincing unlike some of their previous live outings where they have tried to get too much subtle detail across, these were tailor made tracks they have done for their live sets this summer - Europe is in for treat. Sean said they aren't gonna put them out (!) but I will attempt to persuade otherwise. Crowd were totally up for it and the beats were a dancefloor friendly without compromising. They weren't on for long enough though at most 30mins.

erm no. It was just assorted techno, he tested out a couple of tracks from a WAP79 test pressing on the crowd, almost unrecognisable through that PA. they seemed ok :)

Cylobian Sunset style.

yeah, he played 'diof' which I have been raving on about, didn't recognise anything else but was pretty trashed by then having discovered the free Becks upstairs. I bumped into Tom (Sqpsh) at the beginning of one of the tracks and said he'd done the bassline for it and of course it was ace.

ha ha. one of them wasn't wearing an orange t-shirt with a warpmc40 barcode on the front was he? :) yeah I did go a bit nuts. but was trying to make up for the small audience at that point as most people had fucked off.(admittedly the warp tour bus left at 1) sad that chris only played to about 50 people.

Impossible to listen without dancing :)

yeah it was a good gig. bumped(pretty literally) into some Italians(?) on the way out, all carrying Fat Cat bags - if they were tourists in on the off chance they got *very* lucky that night... g.
