"Evening at the Grange" was a 5-song set done with Lida Husik. Husik is
better known for a sort of folky-rocky style of singing and guitarizing, so
this seemed an unlikely pair. I'm not really a folky-rocky fan. In fact,
I hate the whole unshaved and uwashed concept. But that's my hang-up, I
guess...
Surprisingly - it works. And quite well!
Husik and Hannant also released a full-length together, entitled simply
"Husikesque". This replicates/duplicates/clones at least one cut from
"Grange", but is otherwise varied and generally amusing material. The
lyrics are often quite silly, which I like, but one need not bother oneself
about that, as the singing style is quite abstract. In fact, Husik's voice
works as another instrument meandering among Hannant's synthethic bleeps,
melodic fragments, and trippy beats. Beau (well, if he's going to be Home
on the Grange, then we're going to call him Beau, and there's just nothing
the can do about that) shows to good effect(s) his usual command of texture
and layering.
I've not heard enough of Hannant's solo work (regrettably, as my friends
are not generous enough to give me their entire collections) to compare,
but I would say that either of these releases is a worthy listen.
