Re: Formation of New Westcoast Label

The Westcoast of North America is one of the electronic/dance music world's
most musically fertile regions, home to a multitude of independent labels,
creative musicians, dedicated deejays, supportive party promoters,
enthusiastic fanzines and insightful music culture publications.
Over the last decade, the independent dance music scene has seen more
positive growth and success on the Westcoast than most other regions of the
world, especially in the genres of house and electronic dance music. I have
followed this growth carefully over the years, having been involved with
underground dance clubs, promotions, parties, live shows, magazines, record
labels, artists, producers, retail, distribution, and production. I spent
the last three years working in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and have
realized that to truly reach my own goals of sonic excitation, I must dwell
in my hometown and share my experience with the local music makers.
MAP RECORDS will help Vancouver to become an active contributor to the
Westcoast dance music community, creating a triad that includes San
Francisco and Los Angeles. While the world-wide dance music community is
often segregated into narrow musical styles, the Westcoast represents a
unique sonic melting pot, mixing influences from ambient, house, techno,
dub, trance, hip hop, reggae, electronica and jazz. MAP RECORDS will
develop a diverse roster of artists from the Vancouver region who are
inspired by all types of music, furthering our reputation as an eclectic
musical culture. As our city joins the international scene, we will develop
artists from throughout the international electroniculture.
Our sonic perspective will be at first very Westcoast flavoured, offering
music to stimulate both the mind and the feet; we're not interested in
releasing records that sound familiar immediately or follow in the imprints
of others. You can also expect interesting collaborations and re-interpreta
tions, as our friends all over the world offer their creative ideas and
remixing talents for many of our releases.
Upcoming Releases Include a trancin'funkie collaborative 12" between MARK GAGE
(Vapourspace, Cusp, Swim, Plus 8, FFRR) and PILGRIMS OF THE MIND
(Outersanctum, Interchill), ethnodrum'n'dubfusion 12" and album of MERE
MORTALS (Wax Trax, Endzeit), as well as Vancouver's first electronic artist
compilation WELCOME TO LOTUS LAND.
