quoted 1 line Don't keep music underground.> Don't keep music underground.
Here's brief explaination which everyone should know, why Rephlex believes in this, or at least makes us think that. (never actually know) Rephlex would like to get their work exposed to as many people as possible--including people who'll probably hate it--as is the case with _any_ artist (musical or graphic or whatever) who signs a contract with a record label or any other commercial distributor. Richard James knows he's not underground. No artist can boast that they have any conceiveable notions of being "sheltered", "withdrawn", or "making music for themselves", _purely_, if they try and sell it to an unknown public. They HOPE those records get sold, or they look worthless. I'll tell ya--I'm among the biggest Richard James fan I know [I know....barf, barf,....sounds like "the biggest Cure fan" concept], but RJ's got _quite_ the unbelieveable marketing concept going on here: he has already established himself, he can do what he wants. Only he knows how satisfied he _really_ is, though, so maybe that's why he keeps on recording. But what's that mean for the music we buy? Who's to judge? Maybe only someone who has no idea--THAT's who I'd want to freak out, if I was him--it's like the MTV thing, people [newbies] are finally starting to realize that this music has VALUE. But I'm not going to be the one to determine what that value is. It's invaluable, to me--he's created a monster. Richard has motives--he wants to either (A) Make money, (B) Make noise, or (C) Convince the world or himself that he's completely insane. Sorry to put words in your mouth, but everyone here needs to know, Rich, if you're so not underground, then is the techno music we buy from you not a complete contridiction and redefinition of the term? Where's the "underground" stuff? Do you have any? Rich...? Hello......... I guess if it's really underground, then we'll never know. God, what a wimp. ;) Steve Lammers DJ/Musician(?)/Artist/Everyone's Worst Critic

Where's the "underground" ST>stuff? Do you have any? Rich...? Hello......... Why is the term 'Underground' used as a measure of records sold? It's fuck all to do with how many records you sell, or limit to. Underground is an ATTITUDE, not a BUSINESS STRATEGY. I think being underground means taking the majors and their plastic music on at their own game, and beating them. I completely support Aphex if he wants to bridge gaps and introduce new listeners to his (IMO) resolutely independent and underground music, and if he sells more records by doing a Pirelli ad, then he deserves to. Keeping your music within a clique is underground, yes - burying your head underground like an ostrich. Cheers, SjaY. *Fido* 2:250/151 *E-Mail* Geotrax@jukjoint.warp.co.uk ...
