OK, let's try this again. Please comment, make suggestions...
Can anyone suggest labels and/or artists who incorporate elements of IDM,
along with other styles, but in the end can't be pinned down to a specific
genre? I'm asking both to find music I might enjoy, as well as to get
suggestions for where to send my own material.
For example: ClockDVA, Download, Meat Beat Manifesto, etc.
Do current industrial and IDM/techno meet at a clear boundary, or is there
some kind of murky DMZ in-between?
What elements of the IDM sound are absolutely essential? If you toss
traditional harmony and melody out the window, is it something else and no
longer IDM?
If the "I" is for "Intelligent" and the "D" is for "Dance", then something
like Jeff Mills' "Growth" EP is better-qualified to my ears than anything
by FSOL, for example. I also count the first track on AFX's AB4 among my
favorites in the style, and I already know what most of you think about
that record.

I do not understand the ongoing squabbles about genre-boundaries, which
take place on almost any mailing list or newsgroup you care to name.
Perhaps someone would care to explain.
Personally, I find categories only useful as rough reference points, and
see the musical spectrum as a multi-dimensional continuum without
boundaries.
