MM - Nothing should shock us any more. We really should be completely jaded and cynical by now. The vapid mortgage-supporting urge to sell out one's principles hit rock bottom when Johnny Lydon/Rotten's voice became the soundtrack to an automobile ad - for a doubtlessly non-trivial stack of currency. Of course, Sir Rotten, of "Anarchy in the U.K.", perhaps more appropriately labeled "Opportunism in the Wake of Mounting Expenses", could always blame his turncoat style on his sometime guru Malcolm McLaren, the epitome of the "philosophy is only phasion" lifestyle. Auteurs, poseurs, richer than I, spit on their audiences - but I still like the music. Is it self-hatred, or should art (a term which begs the question in this context, but so be it) be separated from the artist? After all, Picasso treated his many female acquaintances in a less than enlightened manner, but you can't fault the misguided mysogonist on his unerring sense of color, now can you? Perhaps art theft is our only recourse. Enough for now. I just realized what a brilliant name Single Cell Orchestra is.
