I picked up this tasty treat yesterday...my immediate reactions are fairly good, but at times, the sound is a bit self-indulgent on Jenkinson's part. 'Deep Fried Pizza' starts off really well, with all that frantic drumming and twangy bass...probably one of the best intros, but it fails to really turn into anything...not that's it's a BAD track, that's just not true...it just doesn't have the magic of, well, the DJ Food remix. I also picked up a copy of Tom Jenkinson's "Bubble and Squeak" and I think at the moment I prefer this over the rephlex 12". I hope the rephlex album out this Monday is more polished than the 12". The man has so much potential, and is spoiling it over rushed tracks. It seems that the Worm Interface material is very drum'n bass, and the rephlex stuff (at least the 12") is more drummin' p-funk...wonder what his Warp material is going to sound like? The 'Deep Fried Pizza' track to me sounded a bit like Return to Forever crossed with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Now 'Theme from Goodbye Renaldo' I'm totally enthralled with - the melody/chord bit is beautiful, and the slow trip-hoppish beats with those flanged snares really adds to the feel of the tune. I'm not sure I'm crazy about the 'Shaft theme'-style wahka- wahka beginning though...

I'd have to agree with this somewhat - a lot of his tracks demonstrate his skill but don't really have anything going in terms of development. It seems like he could spend a bit more time making a track flow - many of his tunes segue from section to section with a crossfade but don't really integrate too well. Luke Vibert, on the other hand, really makes stuff click and can get a track to build up nicely and then switch into something different without interrupting the continuity of the track. Not that Mr. Jenkinson isn't putting out quality material; just a bit more polish and the tunes could go from excellent to masterpiece. That said, I'm still really looking forward to the full-length on Rephlex... GD

Definitely. The Rephlex 12" leaves me wanting more...I think that an album full of wonky breaks and improv bass (Jenkinson as the Laswell of techno?) has some serious potential, and is only justified by this release. Now Bubble and Squeak on the other hand...it's not as original and brave as the rephlex release, but works better as a 12". Some amazing breaks and drum'n bass ethic. Wonderfully giddy two tracker. _Port Rhombus_ (the track from the WAP74 12" of the same name) is a spikey, less 'feel good' factor track (than say _SqPsher Theme_) - moody guitar strums and melancholy jazz chords. Very good stuff and very much a finished track. Me like. _Problem Child_ is a beaty workout, cut-up Squarepusher style. I think one of his loops is a mangled human beat-box sample too. Nice mad stuff. _Significant Others_ is an echoey fractured thing. Interesting but like _Problem Child_, more a track to be intrigued by than to love. A good 12" then but the Rephlex one just has the edge I think - mainly because the chords in _Theme from Goodbye Renaldo_ remind me of Carl Craigs _Evolution_. I don't think there is anything 'wrong' with self-indulgence. It helps artists and music progress and provides a kind of extremity. No? Loads of people are self-indulgent, every musician that doesn't make music for money is. Even if they do it for cash, I s'pose they still are in a different way. 'Deep Fried Pizza' starts off really well, with all

(As usual) Listen again and digest more. let this track become a well known friend. (Didn't you smile when that straight techno hihat appeared?) AND WHAT ABOUT THE ONE BEFORE!!!

I disagree. One thing about Tom, he doesn't rush tracks ever. They are exactly as he wants them - down to the last 16th. I don't reckon the album is at all more polished, just more varied. It seems that

Well, I am a funkster at heart and I like to explore his jazzier side when allowed (especially on this EP). His WARP stuff will be tuf - have you heard P. Rhombus - BLIMEY!

I absolutely agree that the 12" is extremely fresh, inventive...at times, quite amazing. It just doesn't quite flow as nicely as I'd like.

Well, you'd know better than I. I really like my tracks though, and not just snips and samples of amazing concepts. I like things to flow...
