Bonjour - Just discovered a great record. Digging through the bins for the Ukrainians, I found a real fist-in-the-eye (to steal a picturesque Italian expression), red cardboard CD-jacket with chaotic gold type plastering front and back. Eventually determined (with assistance from the hip cats at Discovery Discs) that this is a remix record of Ui, titled "Unlike-Remixes Volume 1". First of all, who the hell is Ui? Listening now through the other PowerMac's CD-ROM. Well, mixes a sample of Trio ("Da da da", just the bleeps please, no vocals required) with some overdriven noise bass and new rhythms. Sounds like some live drumming filters in and out over dubby rhythms throughout the six long cuts. Fans of Tortoise would do well to check this out. I actually prefer this set to the Tortoise full-length. Also the non-literal FSOL connection is there, in the sound. Hey, what's the deal with unpronouncable band names? Look to your own consciences, Autechre! Is it copyright law? Are we running out of reasonable band names? Will artists eventually only have serial numbers to their credit? Back to the noise. Backwards drums make me dizzy (a compliment), and these are being unstruck and or unprogrammed all over this shiny plastic. Remixes are by, among others: Sasha Frere-Jones and David Linton at Haus of Ouch John McEntire at Chemical Sound Hissy Boy, Ian Blurton David Dacks and Nick Holmes Some of this is danceable, most is ambient in a trippy noisy way, and the rest is just for listening. Bring a metal container so you can bang along to it. Will I still love this in three days? I don't know, but right now, I wish I had thought of it. Zenon M. Feszczak Jealous Guy
