I know that this is a subject that has been beaten to death but I found this in the used section at a local record store in San Antonio, Texas, Music and Words by Aphex Twin. When I found it, I had this sensation, like if you were to find a Q-Chastic or one of the Caustic Windows still in the original rapping. It was something I was not expecting to find after all, it was a promo and was released a long time ago. It was 6 bucks. The jewel case was cracked on the front and back but the CD was not scatched. I tossed the case and put it in one of those flemsy plastic single CD holders, the ones that can hold a CD on one side and liner notes on the other. Some people my think this nothing compared but admit it, if you buy one Aphex Twin release, you got to buy them all! BTW... does any body know what we can expect from RDJ next?

Or die trying, which is the fate unfortunately for anyone who actually dares attempt this feat among feats. Purrsonally, I prefer to buy his better releases, and save the really hard to find stuff which isn't that good (i.e. ab4, for example), for the needier trainspotters to snap up. This all boils down to an issue of whether you buy music for music's sake or for the sake of whose name appears on the record. This recalls the old archetypal rock star such as Elvis growing fat off his or her name alone, regardless of the music, and is a trait common in pop. Of course, underground techno music is not really pop, but at times they can share common traits. Recall that every rock critic in existence has made a comment at some point in his or her literary (?) carreer to the effect that "techno...is faceless...", and to an extent it is, but when one gets to the stage where you are willing to plunk down $50 on some old recording RDJ did of himself going to the bathroom on an ant farm in first grade, then things get a little silly. Case in point, I bought Words for $5 and sold it for $15. It is the Aphex Twin name, not neccessarily the music, that dictated this price. Let's just all think about that for a little bit now. RDJ is a really good artist, but he has his brilliant and not so brilliant stuff, just like any other artist does. Whereas I play Hangable Auto Bulb every chance I get, I almost never even think about touching my copy of "Only For The Headstrong 2" and firing up that Powerpill track, now, do I? I certainly never ever would ever have listened to "Words and Music" more than twice, which is why I let it be sold off to someone who really "needed" it for some reason. Moral: just cause the label says that the 12" is by so-and-so, does not mean it is going to be so-and-so's best work, and you have to take that into consideration now and again before deciding to what lengths to go to get that release. And you certainly don't _need_ to buy everything by a given artist, only go for the good stuff, that's my opinion...

Who knows? I hope it's good though, I have yet to be disappointed by any of his recent stuff, exception of D. Rhubarb, of course... OnTheHeadphonesAsITypeThis: Squarepusher Theme Now there is an example of what I have just been talking about. Alroy Road Tracks was pretty good, but not up to this great standard that has somehow been set for Squarepusher, whilst "Theme" exceeds that same standard. The music, the content, not the name, has spoken. Well, g'nite... [keep] BOYCOTT [ing] SHELL OIL http://home.inreach.com/sugatis/index.html

Coming Soon: Caustic Window full length LP on Rephlex, Mike and Rich (RDJ together with Mike P) LP(?) on Rephlex, and a full length LP on Warp after that (as Aphex?), possibly with an EP as well I should think, as thats how it's been done before. Hopefully this stuff will all be out before summers end... /""'' /"'RESH Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA
