Ok,
With the Dockstader thread coming to a close, what do you guys think about
Raymond Scott?
He was a recluse, created so much of his own synth equipment it would make
Panasonic blush. The pictures of his gear is just sickening: wall after
wall of knobs. He even created the modern implementation of an analog
"sequencer" before anybody else, even Bob Moog. Nobody really knows
exactly when he first made a working prototype or first thought of the
concept, since he rarely communicated with people in the electronic music
field.
He was also a jazz musician, and scored songs I'm sure you've heard
before, like "powerhouse". (you know, the "factory music" from all the
warner bros. cartoons) He was an amazingly talented fellow.
I mostly got this info from the liner notes of the "soothing sounds for
baby" CD re-releases, which is some amazing material if you haven't heard
it yet. These LPs were supposed to be for calming irritable babies, but it
ended up sounding rather spooky and insane. The music is very electronic
and sequenced, highly repetitve, but an impressive achievement for 1960.
