Some stuff I picked up at the weekend. I'll try and do some proper reviews again soon but I may not have the time. Out Now: Herbert 3x12" (Phono) Very cool house stuff with intelligence and humour. Falls between Basic Channel and Clear Clatterbox - Eazy Does it LP (clear) More funky, jazzy stuff from the clear box of clatters Surgeon - Communications (downward) 6 track double 12" of Mills-ish techno. "Wire" kicks ass! On some of the other tracks, surge is exploring further than his earlier 12"s by developing the tracks more, instead of them just being a kicking groove. Regis - 4 tracker (downward) Downward is a local label in my home town of Birmingham, and this bangin' 12", while not as good as surgeon's stuff, is tough mixing material in a repetitive detroit style. Plus the latter track on each side ends in a cleanly integrated lock groove. Jiri.Ceiver - Trental rmxs (harthouse) 3 tracks of quite odd and very listenable tribal-ish techno, and a mellow electro Doctor Rockitt remix, well worth checking out. On the Way (promos): Freeform - 4 track double 12" (WARP) (as previously mentioned on CD), 4 varied tracks of excellence from idm's 95 tip for 96 (before we had all heard about ^2p ) Squarepusher - Squarepusher Theme (Rephlex) Oh, speaking of which. Rephlex win the race to get some of Tom's stuff out post-the-signing-up-hype. Not as hard by any stretch as the Dragon Disc tracks, and really exploring the jazzier end of what he's been putting out so far. Damn fine. Hardfloor - new 4-tracker (harthouse) HF move back to house tempos after the "Dadamnphreaknoisefunk" EP, but stay clear of returning too closely to their forumula. It's got 303's, yes, but in a new flavour. Includes mixes by Mark Bell and Surgeon. Also picked up UR's electronic Warfare, the one with Aux 88 and Drexciya mixes on the B-side. Wicked, wicked Electro!
