I agree, the presets are very special sounding because not only do they encapsulate (IMO) part of the original techno sound because of their non(pseudo?)-realism. The DX-7 and other 8 operator FM synths provided a very sterile audio realism. Great for electric piano (Lionel Ritchie et al) sounds and breathy wind sounds (Tears for Fears) but not for obviously techno music. Also the sounds are not so fat that they present a problem fitting them into a mix. The little pitch bend and tone wheels are in a cool position. There's something about those controllers thats unique. By the same token the joystick on my Korg Poly61 has a very distinctive feel.

How about Sixtease --> IMO THE synth organ sound 5th String --> I've heard this on so many classic Detroit techno trax. Set your pitch bend range to a 5th ie: at full scale up from mid C you get a G. Play a major & hold a 7th cord C7 major is a good one and wank that pitch wheel. Snoopy Mars to ???? Chillos Matthew D. From all the FM boxes, the one you need that will do all of the above is the TG77, which has 6 ops with variable waveforms plus 2 digital resonant filters that sound horribly cool. It will blow the crap out of both DX100, TX81Z etc.

I think they are not that different from the rest of the yamaha FM nachines as well as the Casio VZ series.

DOn't use all the ops! But the more ops you got the more noise you can make! Mike Dvorkin -------------------------------------- <Fujitsu Network Transmission Systems> -------------------------------------- E: mdvorkin@tddcae99.fnts.com VOX: (214) 479 2977
