Oliver did two shows here. The first was a small intimate gathering at a once-every-so-often event called Public Space (last one was Autechre/STC). The second was at a full-on party (I guess I can't call it "rave" anymore, ever since I was on CU-SeeMe talking to some English Techno boffin who keeled over with laughter when I said I went to "raves") that also featured another Freaky Chakra vs. Sickle Cell Anemia slugfest. I went to the first event. The setting and crowd size was not terribly dissimilar to g303's description of the Gescom/Zoviet France intermingling. Oliver sat down at a table with a Novation Basstation, a Juno 106, a Yamaha digital mixer, a little Kawai sequencer, and a couple of other things (maybe a sampler, it was in a rack box and it was dark ... ). I thought he'd go for an Ambient set but instead played mostly fast tempo German trance. I liked most of it quite a bit, although the setting was a bit odd ... not really a place to dance in, and half the people left during his set (!) - maybe they wanted/expected an Ambient set. It would have worked better at a normal "rave" (quote-unquote). As for the other event, as much as I wanted to go, the $40 (for two) admission price and a psychic premonition on my part made me decide to stay home. And sure enough, I heard the next day that the event was busted. (It was more a learned premonition; any events that are more of the Hardcore - and not in the UK breakbeat sense of the term - are busted more often than not these days here in Los Angeles). So I don't know if Oliver got to play at it or not. - Greg
