Big thanks to those who recommended some great old electro.
Some of the stuff I've checked out:
The Jonzun Crew ....Pack Jam
Great hard funk. Has slower "classic" electro beats, Kraftwerkian
melody, vocodered "Pack Jam...Look out", hand clappin' funkin', and a
tinny synth arpeggio. There is a original version and an "instrumental"
the instrumental lacks a lot of the vocodering, which to me is half the
fun and as a result sounds a little too sparse.
Dynamix II .... Electro-Bass Comp vol.1
Starts off with a excellent bass workout "Just give the dj a break",
more miami bass than "classic" electro. "Techno Bass" manages to weave
samples of Electric Cafe with hundreds of others all over a Numbers drum
track. Most of the tracks mix early electro influences with late 80s
techno to varied degrees of success. Of note is the excellent "II
Evolve" simply amazing, sci-fi craziness. Besides the one or two subpar
songs, this is a very good cd.
v/a Submerge .... Origins of a Sound
Not much to be said about this one. Except:
Excellent. Aux 88 ...wow!
Zapp .... Zapp I
Wow. Everyone has sampled this record. The sad thing is they
definitely have not done it justice. "More bounce to the ounce" is tough
electro funk complete with mouth tubes (or whatever they are called).
Basically this is the sound garden from which the Jedi Knights picked
much of their material, especially the "ashooks" and beat. Most recently
this song was used in some very popular rap song ( 2Pac?).
Jedi Knights .... New Skool Science
More or less what I expected from the Jedi's. Dirty, tough,
rough, and guaranteed funky. Does anyone else hear the words "Blaff Reader"
being spoken in One for M.A.W ? All excellent tracks.
Anyone have more suggestions?
(gotta have more,more...)
