One of the first Mo'Wax 12"s to seriously depart from their typical downtempo sound. Two mixes from Pritchard & Middleton - one of which marked the first incarnation of their Chameleon guise. As you would expect, it's a sunny slice of Bukem-styled drum'n'bass that leads straight into a more hip-hoppy mix credited to Global Communication. The flip has Roni Size & DJ Krust's mix, which I still think is one of the coolest jazz-jungle cuts *ever*, and Autechre's way-out-there mix. A great 12".

*The* introduction to the sounds that made Mo'Wax famous. Some pretty hype jams, including Mike Kandel's epic "They Came In Peace" and DJ Shadow's essential "In Flux."

Mo'Wax's tribute to Sun Ra was a 2x12" with mixes from U.N.K.L.E., Howie B, Portishead, and Plaid - all solid takes on hip-hop abstraction. Howie B and Portishead steal the show, IMHO, with Plaid's two mixes coming in a close second. - Matthew

Oh, that's a good one. Very hip-hip-hoppy like _Meiso_, but there's a greater jazz appeal to it. Of the 12 some odd tracks, my favorite ones are the short introductions to each platter. "Lunation" features some fabtastic scratching. "To the Infinity" is very throbbing pouchesque in it's approach. "Did This Vibe" makes me daydream about Milt Jackson's first acid trip. A nice LP; especially if you like jazz vibes. and while i'm at it... --- the futurepope's flu-cold-and-cough reviews [i'm not dissing alan; it's just what ails me right now.] tried cheering myself up with a midweek trip to the rekkid store. this is what i found. i'm still sick, btw. federation] [life so free remix ep] [mo wax] reminds me of early incognito. the a side's "party rockin production mix" introduces us to a familiar, loveable wagon christ sample. the portishead remix is, well, it's a portishead remix. i think this one predates their _dummy_ album, so it's interesting to see where they were going before they became a pseudocommerical success. the two underdog remixes sound familiar to their massive attack remix work. is it idm? is it complete? why so many questions? req's garden] [req's garden ep] [skint] where are my adidas sneakers? "razzmatazz" features a keen electro hiphop breakdance kind of sweet beat and an odd vocal sample. 'you' on the flip side has a bumpin + jumpin east coast beat to it with some syncopated clatter. the title track rocks the hardest with the whole hip hop scat thing going. when this is playing and i close my eyes, all i can see is slick rick. man, this kinda shit happens ev-er-y day. clatterbox] [clatterbox] [clear] wau! who brought brandy in here? "spatz" features a little pinch of soul to it accompanied by some sex bass. nice. does anyone want to go tagging on some subway cars in dc tonight? i promise to bring my boom box; i'll probably play "sleazy does it." "drop it"? musique non stop. electro pop. this sounds like a smart merger between electro, inc. and the kraftwerk corp. our little synth organ friend grinds some serious cheese. "spatz remix" features some wild clattachatta and a light synth melody. this tune starts wacky but gets pretty fast. bill and ben] [10 inches of funk] [harthouse] a goofy, crunchy, dirty, dubby little number. not much to it, but it progresses well and stops before it gets dull. i wish there was a little more variety to this one; it had promise. can't tell you how many hokey 'bill and ted' or 'ben and jerry' witticisms i expect to get whenever i start to play this one. this is on harthouse? soap] [dumb funk resistance] [harthouse] wow. now i liked this one. a wonderful mixture of dub, jazz, d+b, house, acid, trip, and whatever other label you want to smack on this dumb thing. standouts include the title track and "bailout." "sensor" is a mellow, dubish thang. my favorite is 'foam,' a tremendous drum+bass+house workout. this lp is so good, i want to take it in the tub with me. sorry. that was lame. immersion] [2nd immersion] [swim~] [swim vwm12] you can't judge a record by it's cover. this 4 track ep sounds different than it 'looks.' "fat" has some nice percussion to it but there's very little to it apart from that. again, on the b side, "metal sea" is a nice dip into jungle waters, but there's something missing. "drive" is a little nicer; i expected it to become acidic, but it never does. somewhat mellow at times. [journey to the center of the $3 rack] women of color] [soft touch] what if the black dog and vanessa daou teamed up to compose music for an all nude fashion show? 'soft touch' is an ambient-jazz type thing. the only thing i can't stand is an annoying 'touch me' sample that invades the entire recording. the b side remix is an improvement on the original with the addition of a funkier bass line. sluta veta] [fan club] [mego] this 3 track ep is hit or miss. the first two tracks is an odd soup of beats and bleeps; but it never really makes sense. the b side, "whisper's special," opens with an unusual 2 minute long noodling of a dumb piano sample. i fell like i'm watching olympic gymnastic highlights on television. the tr*p h*p drums come to the rescue and the track gets incredibly groovier. i also got my mitts on a 10" entitled 'death in vegas.' i can't make heads or tails of this. who is the artist? what are the names of the tracks? i'm confused. it's on [ack] deconstruction. also found: spacepimp teex keen rising high sampler with black dog + casper pound original paupa new guinea single tah. .grant.h.horne .http://delta.is.tcu.edu/~ghhorne/

Oh, and another thing. About a month ago, I saw a box set from Mo'wax that looked like it contained all of their first 40+ eps; essentially the ones listed on the Mo'wax discography at Hyperreal. I passed it up that day, and has since disappeared. Was this a special item, or could it still be tracked down with little injury? .grant.h.horne .http://delta.is.tcu.edu/~ghhorne/ .amor real.global communication

Yup - a goodie. A smooth jazzy jungle remix by Chameleon (the Glob. Comms boys) is the highlight but theres also a tr*p-hop remix by Glob. Comms., a sparse but good Roni Size mix and a warm and soothing Autechre remix. A very good remix 12" OnNow: Kinesthesia : the _Empathy Box_ hidden track. Uh, what the fuck? Sounds like a load of old demos or something. With guitars and a brass band. I like! || [CiM] || s.walley@uea.ac.uk || http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/~u9323899/
