Having just heard "Haunted Dancehall" for the first time, I can easily say that Andrew Weatherall could have started a great new genre. Could the track "Tow Truck" be the inspirational debut of Tarantino Trip Hop? Great album by the way...how did I miss this one earlier? ____ __,--- --.__ ,- ; . It's easily one of my favorite IDM records. I think it's criminal that it's held in such low esteem. It's worth hearing for the production techniques alone. Does anyone know if Weatherall is working on any more original material?

Haven't heard, but I hope so. Anyway, I didn't know that Haunted Dancehall *was* esteemed lowly - I think it's great (as said, the production techniques are *very* interesting).......I should go out and get it on vinyl now that I've got my turntable working again. I think Andy, et al did a great job doing the dubby thing to dance *and* making it sound pretty fresh....... cya brian

I agree...Haunted Dancehall is a fucking cool record. Does anyone have anything else by Sabres of Paradise? I only have the Smokebelch single on 12 inch but I don't have Sabresonic or anything else Weatherall has done. I'd be interested to hear some more :) Dawn

Although it's not the Sabres specifically, the Versus EP off Haunted... is super-keen. It's a nice, eclectic group of remixes by LFO, Depth Charge, Chemical Bros., Nightmares on Wax, and In the Nursery. Great EP. I love it. I also have Sabresonic II, which is quite good but not as distinctive or innovative as Haunted Dancehall. -jon On Sat, 27 Apr 1996, Dawn DiMare wrote:

Try for starters Primal Scream's "Screamadelica" album. It has some of Weatherall's best production work, like "Higher Than The Sun - A Dub Symphony In Two Parts". Also One Dove's "Morning White Dove", that Andy Weatherall produced is very nice. More info can be found on Spoon!'s Sabreweb - http://www.warwick.ac.uk/~esvtk/sabreweb/ .

I think it came out in a slew of strong releases in 1994. It did get a few mentions back then. I picked it up based on the strength of previous works, and was quite pleased. Might want to check out David Holmes _This Films Crap Lets Slash The Seats_. Despite the weird title, this one feels like a concept cd, sort of like _Haunted Dancehall_. Or a soundtrack. Either way, "No Mans Land" is an excellent intro track, with the sound of the person walking and the bell chiming. Track 2, "Slash The Seats", is a cool slow acid tune. Yum yum. Well since Haunted Dancehall he's been concentrating on his Emissions labels. He presently records under two names Bloodsugar is with Dave Harrow of On U Sound/Technova fame, tehy had a double 12" pack released through Emissions a short while ago, 5 very lo-fi tracks, pretty cool. They've also recorded underteh pseudonym Deanne Day, and again had an Emission out, which was more 'dancefloor'. Two Lone Swordsmen is Andy and Keith tenniswood (who he?) and they had a 12" released a couple of weeks ago (through emissions) Still making quality records. If having trouble finding them they can be oprdered direct from emissions, check out the homepage: http://www.phreak.co.uk/haywire/emissions/ For complete tracklistings etc. check out the sabreweb: UK: http://www.warwick.ac.uk/~esvtk/sabreweb US: http://www.lava.net/~grizzla/Sabreweb3.html cheers martin

He also appeared collaborating on the Sabrettes comp 101+303+909 now form a band. The Deanne Day stuff is excellent. Check out the Fresh Emissions compilation.

yep, that is exactly what I thought and since I am no technician I let this one album pass althought Wilmot and Duke of Earl are great tracks. Sabresonic is a different story. snowjob@actcom.co.il The Morpheus Equation: Start + Middle + End = Sand

The original release of Sabresonic is much better and without the cheese of II. Probably quite difficult to find, however.

in '93 i was pretty disappointed with it, but only because it was more experimental and strange than i'd been expecting. they'd just had the david holmes mix of "smokebelch II" strafing dancefloors all over. they put a 'beatless mix' on here? "clock factory" was about 10 mins of ticking and dripping bass. that said "still fighting" a further remix of one of their primal scream mixes, was a deep driving number w/ ferocious 3 dimensional acid belching. wonderful. i think i'm going to have to play this again soon. $15 (used) does seem a bit high tho'. -btw- can anyone tell me if theres anything on "sabresonic II" not available elsewhere. it looks like all the tracks are from "sabresonic" + "smokebelch II" + "theme". -martin
