I've taken some time to sit down with a notepad and review some
recent acquisitions, some new, some not so new:
Drexciya 3 (Rephlex)
Legion of Green Men - Mosaic Eye (hell I forgot the label)
IDM - Threads
Clatterbox - Easy Does it / Spatz (Clear)
Bola 1 EP (Skam)
Orbital - The Box (Internal)
I'm going to spread them over a number of posts as I have a mailer
bug which will probably result in multiple copies of this post if I
don't.
let's go
Drexciya 3
Almost thought I'd never find this one, being as it is on Rephlex and
not particularly recent at that, but thanks to local IDM contact with
someone who roves parts of the country at times (Rob McEwen) I am now
the proud owner of this once small gap in my collection.
Typically Drexciya of course, "Antivapor waves" kicks of with nice
thick-sounding wooden kick drums in a tough funky electro rhythm and
builds on it a Detroit B-line and lots of squishy synth lines, kinda
distorted strings and a trilled asdic ping. "Intensified Magentron"
follows with Scifi synths, detroit strings energetic beats that roll
along and some aphexy bass stabs. Flip over for "Hydro Cubes", a much
darker interpretation of the overall sound of the EP, and of course a
close relative of the later WARP-release "Hydro Theory". Finally
"Aquatic Bata Particles" (sic) is a sparser affair which bulbbles
along with some cleanly defined scrubby sounds to the left and
squeaky melodies on the right (assuming my stero is set up
correctly!)
It's unfortunate that this will probably remain difficult to find,
but anyone who enjoys any Drexciya stuff should hunt this down if
they can.
Legion of Green Men - Mosaic Eye.
More props going out, this time to Derek Oliver who sent me this as
part of a trade. Contains 2 mixes of the title track, plus around a
dozen "Eternal Opuscules" or locked grooves to you and me (but
unusually many of them feature a short run-in track of around 30
seconds) I say around a dozen - the sleeve copy states "14" then
trackslists 9 and I haven't bothered to count, but they come in
related groups, and some are also related to Mosaic Eye in one of its
2 forms. One mix is funky and rich ,pretty mellow, with some guy
going on in the background about sounds of some sort. Near the end it
breaks down with another guy saying "If I hadthe money I'd smoke two,
three of these a day" before dropping to a weird ambient section
which winds up to a final locked groove. The other mix is tougher and
on the techno tip, my guess being that this is the Mark
Gage/Vapourspace mix touted on the sleeve.
