Where is this west coast thing cropping up? Maybe it's the whole Bassex thing that people are thinking of, but isn't all that DJ Icee stuff alot more popular in the clubs? That's from Flo'ida, y'know. like anybody else cares... eric

i care! i don't know what the "west coast" sound is either, and i live on the west coast and make records... some of which even have breakbeats although i wouldn't really call them "west coast" anything. i mean here in san francisco alone we've got single cell orchestra (electro), freaky chakra (trance-funk), spacetime continuum (idm), astral matrix (acid trance), me (uncategorizable)... :) people just love to slap labels on things. To slam a point even furthur, look at how they advertise Spacetime Contiuum-EMIT ECAPS in XLR8R. Astralwerks, (listen up Pete Wohleski!!!) it is not necessary to categorize every release, look how the UK does it, especially Mille Plateaux's Ad for Hypermodern Jazz 2000.5...You don't see any catchphrases, genre words, or other descriptions for the music, it's better that way! Let the trainspotting begin! Derek Jordan

I'm afraid I agree with you. It just occurred to me last night that you HAVE to do this in America because most of the "current" buying public has just caught on to this stuff, and don't really know about the history of underground music genres--except from soundtracks of COOL WORLD, VIRTUOSITY, JOHNNY MNEMONIC, and STRANGE DAYS. It's saddening, isn't it.
