RDJ: It took me a while to get into his music (via Surfing On Sine Waves and SAW1), but now that I have I truly believe him to be one of the most incredible musicians of the last few years. When you filter through the shit tracks, media hype, what you are left with is hauntingly beautiful, timeless music dripping with soul and emotion. Both the SAW albums and a fair proportion of his other work is undescribably good. But what pisses me off is all the crap like AB4 he puts out to take the piss out of his fans... I personally feel the trouble with his music is that I only really like between 50-60% of what he puts out. What worries me that if he really does have hours and hours of material which had never been released, it must be absolute shit. Assuming the stuff he releases is his best, the stuff he doesn't release must suck big time... Autechre: Certainly one of the best acts around, I have an enormous amount of respect for them. But I cannot quite reach the heights of passion that the Dragon Reborn gushes - I do have all their albums and most of their EPs, and a lot of it is amazing, but... I don't know. They certainly fall into my own personal category of absolute best music, which moves me profoundly, conjures up images and emotions every time I hear it, and takes several listens to fully appreciate. But I don't feel they have *quite* as much of a warm, human feel as RDJ, mainly because of the very mechanical and precise nature of sound and rhythm construction that they use... In fact, at the risk of starting an Autechre vs RDJ thread, I would say that RDJ's music is more emotional, while Autechre's is more consistent... see ya ____________________________________________________ tom churchill e-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk 'each new hour holds new chances for new beginnings' dj/musician/clubber/reviewer......scene but not herd ____________________________________________________

Have you heard it "out" at all? This is not to say that Richard has never released a shit record, but I recently re-evaluated AB4 in the (separate) light of an Autechre (on-the-radio-in-manchester-no-i-don't-have-any-copies) mix tape and an 8k sound rig.

Assume nothing. For better or for worse (I'm still deciding) RDJ releases what he wants. There is much more to come. g.
