On the subject of IDM live, here are the best performances I've seen in Los Angeles: 1. Orbital - Shrine Exposition Hall (where they have the Grammys!) 2. The Orb - American Legion Hall 3. Autechre - Trubador 4. Aphex Twin - DJ set at Mellenium (Sentimental fave) 5. Dust Brothers - Metropolis 6. Space Time Continium - Trubador 7. Freaky Chakra vs. Single Cell Orchestra - Palace 8. Massive Attack - American Legion Hall (I know it's not IDM but what the fuck.) honorable mention for best non-IDM act: Portishead - American debut (1rst show in America) at American Legion Hall. Third show EVER. Religious experience. Also - Pizzicatto 5 - Roxy ... mighty trippy. Worst performances: Moby - Palace, The Prodigy - American Legion Hall (Bjork was at this show...hehe) Hopefully U-ziq will accompany Orbital at Lollapalooza this year. BTW, has anyone seen Nightmares on Wax live? -Fresh

Uh, the Grammys are next door in the Shrine Auditorium, actually.

Shoulda seen 'em in the bullring outside downtown :-) (Or at the Park Plaza ...

It's "Troubadour", actually.

It's "Millennium", actually. And it's too bad you got into IDM too late to have seen him at Renaissance in Agua Dulce back in '92, still for me *the* defining IDM moment in my 5+ years of involvement with this type of music ... At much as I dearly love Autechre, they did not (and could not) do what Richard did in 45 minutes outside in a lovely desert amphitheatre - namely annihilate the last 30 years of Popular Music As We Know It, and singlehandedly convince me that Industrial Music (previously the kingpin of difficult/creative styles) had crawled up its own ass and died. (It also convinced my wife and her bandmate that what they were doing - Industrial - was pointless, so they should just bag it and give up.) His set in San Francisco (witnessed by several members of this august body) on the NASA "See The Light" tour deserves an Honorable Mention.

Shoulda seen 'em in Ventura :-) Other wonderful IDM gigs I have seen: - Carl Craig, Young American Primitive (and DJ's Mixmaster Morris and Adam X) at Plantasia on New Year's Eve in San Bernardino - The Black Dog (really Plaid) in San Francisco - mu-Ziq and Jonah in San Francisco on the infamous boat ride - Orbital at Circa '94 in LA (See Gonzo's #1) - The Orb at the Park Plaza in LA - Robert Leiner (Source/The Source Experience) in LA (OK, so he's more Trance that IDM ... ) - FSOL's ISDN transmission to New York (relayed to Los Angeles) - Rabbit In The Moon at Big Wig Thumper in San Bernardino (on Easter!) Wonderful IDM gigs I wish I'd seen but missed: - Mixmaster Morris boat ride in San Francisco - Pete Namlook in San Francisco - The first Autechre visit (in San Francisco or Seattle or wherever the heck) - mu-Ziq at the Gardening Club in San Francisco (5 days after the boat trip) - The Orb at the bull ring in Pico Rivera (just outside downtown LA) (Would you believe when I heard it was at a bull ring, I said "No WAY are we driving 3 hours to Tijuana Mexico for THAT ... " DUH.) - Goldie at Magic Wednesdays in Hollywood (OK, stretching "IDM" a bit here) I'm sure I'm forgetting some of them ... - Greg
