Techno! Techno! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ eye WEEKLY March 21, 1996 Toronto's arts newspaper .....free every Thursday ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INDIE EYE INDIE EYE TECHNO! TECHNO! TECHNO! by CHRIS O'CONNOR Run sequencers! Uncork Vapo-Rub! Set controls for heart of the sun! A new Deepspace single and album are imminent. The "Hell Hath No Fury Like A Hippy Scorned" 12-inch and as-yet-untitled full-lengther will be among the first releases from Blueprint Recordings -- a new techno label run out of Republic Records at Spadina and Queen. "We're basically a rock 'n' roll techno label," says spokes-Brit David Semple. "We'll be releasing cutting-edge U.K-style techno from artists who want to be more creative and put more soul into it than just that standard 808-style stuff. I'm thinking of Underworld, say, or Leftfield. I think there's a lot of groups here that want to do that, and can do that." Blueprint's main goal is to release 12-inch singles from local acts at the rate of "about six or seven a year" to "try to create interest in the U.K. and U.S. press and establish Canada's position on the global techno map." Its first release will be a three-track EP from Goldfinch called "Ring Fingers," described as "classic Chicago-style house" and set for release in April. Following will be a single from Hydraulic ("like Strange Cargo, but more on the pop side") and, in May, the Deepspace "Hippy" single (featuring new members Omar "ex-Tuesday Weld" Sheriff on guitar and DJ Floe on the turntables). Just added to the Blueprint roster is Dave Howard, who's threatening to release an EP of what Semple describes as "Jungle Lounge." "It's to be a three-track single with all these Henry Mancini strings on it. The weird thing is that I don't think he's even heard jungle techno before." Who -- Dave? Or Mancini? 98DA GET HAPPY And Jungian synchronicity abounds as Jeff "one half of Deepspace" McMurrich proves upon closer inspection to be the co-producer of convicted sludge-vikings 98DA and their new album Blisskrieg. (Him and Rob Sanzo. But then Sanzo's everywhere, isn't he?) And is that a cry of "Dance traitor!" wafting up from the bobble-hat section? No mind. Blisskrieg (accompanying video single: "Booyaka") gets its official launch next Thursday (March 28) at Lee's Palace, where swill- crazed motorcycle enthusiasts can bask in the warm, fuzzy vibes of what the 'DA are calling their "happy album." Happy? "Well, more like a Happy Attack," elaborates Mars, the singer. "Not happy in the sense of clowns, but good vibes nonetheless. The last record [Star Pig: was more of a Loud Rock Band album: this's got more of a good positive feeling." Huh. This "Booyaka" single, Mars. That's actually a quaint Jamaican term for the sound a shotgun makes when it blasts someone's skull into pea-sized fragments, isn't it? "Ah, it's not about guns at all! It just kinda sounded good phonetically. We kinda use it more as a way of saying, like, 'Hey, man!'
