the new compilation from ninjatune is about as much intelligent funk as your g're going to get for your money. This triple lp (#cds?) is chockfull of goodness. where much of acid jazz tends to learn toward smooth jazz for its jazziness. this comp leans toward Charles Kynard, Billy Butler or Booker T and the MGs. Highlights include: 2 from luke vibert. one wagon christ remix plus an excellent acoustic bassy sounding piece with henry mancini-ish breakdowns. right along the lines of _A polished Solid_ Coldcut _Atomic Moog_ is fast paced frenetic funk with a major edge. If you liked _Mooking_ you'll love this. Kruder and Dorfmeister _Shakatakadoodub_ is a slow BASSHEAVY slightly reggae sounding dub. Total funky trance arround 80 bpm. reminiscient of some of Autechre's slower tunes (Eggshell). The only drag was the presence of the DJ Food Squarepusher mix. Love it but I already have it. no pops in it yet either despite repeated playings! :) Mark Bowen mb@gettins.bche.uic.edu
