On a related note to my outburst a few minutes ago, I really only care about
the music. I detest getting caught up in collector fever--even tho' I've
done it myself. I have gone to local record shows and in listenting to the
ambient <g> conversation, about all I hear is "such and such with the blue
vinyl and/or picture disc, etc. etc. just sold for $75 across town." I
RARELY hear the MUSIC being discussed.
Here on this list, I do find much more discussion of the music, which is why
I've stayed subscibed for as long as I have. If one of the people here buys
something for too high a price, or rather the going fair market price if it's
a rare item, and later decides they don't like it, I believe they are
entitled to recover their investment plus maybe a little more for their
trouble in tracking it down, etc., and there is probably someone on this list
who'll want it enough to pay that much. OK, fine. Even though I'm an MBA
student, I still detest rank profiteeering. I'm one of those types who'd
rather subvert the system from the inside, and make it a little fairer and
more ethical. (like wearing my IDM t-shirt to a recent computer show--
he-he)
But, when I see a record store selling a CD, albeit an import, for 35
DOLLARS!!!, I just get ballistic. Especially when they have three or four
lying around, and when I have the near certaion knowledge that CUE may be
arranging to re-issue it, and I can buy it then at a fair CD price between 14
and 20 dollars, and I can then evaluate the music at a price I can live with.
Now, I'm sure we can pass some of the blame for the high price on to the
distributor, but whoever bought that CD for the store got gouged, IMHO.
Ya'll can e-mail about reserving your copies of the last four remaining 2350
Broadways on earth in the original format, but as long as I can get the
actual music, I don't care which label it's on. To me, it's still all about
finding that right particular piece of music to go with what mood I'm in any
given time. I think that mood would be broken every time I pulled that CD
out of it's sleeve knowing I got gouged.
