well,
upon reflecting on this finance thing for a few days,
i think i will add my $0.02.
i am not hardcore like a few of you guys but i have spent
my fair share over the years. i started buying music very
heavily in 1982. that was limited to duran duran records
with money i made babysitting! (i was 13) this progressed
on to depeche, cure, new order etc. as i got better jobs
i bought more and more. there was a time, when i still
lived with my parents, where i spent about 125% of my income
on music. (i regularly racked my plastic to the limit and then
i would pay on it when i got money from grandma and stuff like that)
i was the first guy on my block to have a cd player. do you guys
remember how much cd's used to cost. they were at one time about
28 bucks canadian. ugh!
right now, i am 26. i own my own house, so music took a little bit
of a back seat for a couple of years. (that little bit was me being
on a budget. i would save all my money all month and then after i
made the mortgage payment and covered expenses i would have a bit
left. if i was lucky, i'd have 150-200 bucks to go hog wild.)
i have never been addicted to anything in my life. with one possible
exception. music. when i go to the record store i am like a man
possessed. if i have it, i'll spend it. i have made the unfortunate
mistake of going into a shop carrying the rent money. bad news:-(
i think, judging by some of the tales i've read on this list in the
past few days, maybe we should change the name of the group to
idm.12 step. music-junkies!
well, anyway here is how i measure up...
2500 lp's/12"/ep's
1200 cd's
700 cassettes (yuck!!)
400 7" singles (from the 80's ya know!)
last weekend i was playing a party in london, ontario and i went
on a bender that you guys would love...
here's the damage:
rifled the cheapie bin for old 80's stuff.
found 25 records the likes of DAF, xtc,
tangerine dream etc. 25 records set me
back 12 bucks (cdn). got the autechre
"garbage" ep thrown in for free. i have
no idea why!?!
bought system 7 fire and water. original
imports. he wanted 35 bucks each. i
laughed and said they'd been there longer
than he had and offered him 22 bucks each.
i also got an old school acid house cd for
10 and an old school house cd for 7.
i picked up a new copy of "assemblage-vol 1"
on extreme for 10 bucks (NEW! maybe mispriced)
i got psychick warriors-"vol.1" for 12 bucks
and a cd by a band from toronto called
sucking chest wound-"war on drugs" for 10.
overall, i think i represent the average shopper on
this list. i am hungry for good deals and can
bargain on just about anything. (i have over 50 fax
cd's and have never paid full price for any of them)
i am also a twitching, convulsing, "please don't
make me go into the record store, i'm broke"
junkie. the best kind!!
i'll see you all in record collector hell!
