Well, I just returned from a successful trip to St. Louis and I thought I'd
say a few words. Thanks for all the advice about record stores in town. I
have to say that Deep Grooves is an awesome store. Cool guys working the
counter and quite a good selection. I think I spent about 2 hours in there.
Vintage Vinyl wasn't bad either, though all the more mainstream stuff that
I was looking for was out of stock. My friend did manage to pick up some
stuff she was looking for, so it wasn't a total failure. Also, we did make
it to Best Buy...there, too, we emptied our wallets. It's always nice just
to get someplace with a different selection.
So, what else? I picked up an awesome Gescom EP. I guess it's the Clear EP,
is that the title? It's on the clear label, but other than that, it doesn't
say much. Anyway, this thing is incredible. If I were to compare autechre
with gescom, I think I'd say gescom is more mellow and, dare I say it, less
experimental? Maybe not, but as that goes I tend to call 'experimental' that
stuff I don't like. <smirk> Anyway, great record.
I also picked up the Soft Ballet disk that Morris (I think) recommended. This
is quite a disk, too. Six tracks, with standouts by Autechre, Reload and
Black Dog. This is on SSR in case anyone cares. The note on the bottom of the
front cover says "remix for ordinary people". Uh, yeah, right. Whatever.
I also managed to pick up some other stuff (the new St. Etienne, Dubstar, etc)
but I doubt everyone here cares, so I'll just sign off.
OH. How could I?? I almost forgot the "Emergency EP" from Paul Van Dyk.
This is great. The only other thing I've heard from him (minus his inclusion
on the TEEX comp) is his Green Valley EP. I think I still prefer that one to
this new one, but I need another listen or twelve to decide. Can anyone
recommend anything else by him? He was in Cosmic Baby, was he not?
Thanks again for all the help on record stores...
