In light of the discussion of MTV´s crummy Chill Out Zone, I was wondering if there would be a market for an underground Music Televison. I´m not purely talking IDM here, just dance music, nothing commercial though (very commercial). Instead of the same videos day in day out. Just would like to here some oppinions about this. New Msic Station....hmmm... the concept sounds good but is it sustainable? Do techno artists make videos? I don't think so....at least not at the same vbolume as mainstream music does. I personally don't think that the medium and the message will cohabitate well. I can't see myself lying around the house with Underground MTV on all day and I certainly can't see the local bar, pub, lounge, cocktail house playing UMTV to their afternoon patrons. I wish it could happen but it won't. that's why we invented raves and ambient evenings, right? Dave

Well, I don't think the market's large enough, but once satellite TV becomes more widespread and can offer the same channels globally, there might be enough demand. That is, unless everyone starts getting fiber installed into their homes...and I doubt that'll happen for a while. Only problem is, there aren't a lot of videos for dance music in general. Maybe they could just show abstract patterns to the music or have DJs play sets and intersperce them with interviews and videos. Let's go bug Viacom or Warner Communications about it...:) GD

Well, it's being done in some places, although not as a full-fledged network. In Italy we have a daily show called "Match Music -- Underground Music Movement" that's aired on many different local networks at various times during the day, and it's their most successful program. It's about a hour long, so you rarely get to see more than one video a day, but the concept is ok: a few music reviews (the ambient/IDM stuff being reviewed by Francesco Zappala', a majorly good DJ), some interviews with musicians and other people from the rave/parties scene, lots of party info and so on. If there were an "Underground TV Network", this would probably be the "content" of it, with videos making up for the remaining 22 hours a day. :) I was truly shocked to see AFX's Donkey Rhubarb reviewed on TV in Italy! I'm *sure* that there is a market for Underground MTV -- actually I believe that the ambient/IDM/cyber/whatyouwannacallit market is probably the largest untapped market there is. It's pretty big, responsive to new stimuli, will buy a million things (magazines, books, records, drugs, clothes, whatever!) and, IMHO, it has a lot of cash to blow :) A. -- Alessandro Bianchini bianchini@ibm.net +39 368 3190200 bianchin@librs6k.vatlib.it
