Subtropic 'Homebrew' Reflective REF CD6 Yesterday I stopped into the home of most of my disposable income (the local record store) and Jason, the techno boy said "We got the Subtropic in. It's weird. Really Weird ..." he trailed off and shook his head. Now jason likes a lot of the stuff I do, so I was definitely intrigued. And no, I don't think of it as weird at all. It is drums & bass, but with a wider palette of interesting sounds than you get with the straight-up stuff from the UK. What this disk has, that is missing from a lot of drums & bass, is a real sense of keeping it funky. Even with the rattatats floating in and out, there's a real core groove that keeps coming. And the range of timbres floating in and out are great. Big thumbs up from me. What drums and bass can be, as it develops and mutates, is a way to bring the kind of loose rhythmic jamming of the best jazz drummers, and still be danceable. And be timbrally and harmonically interesting. Subtropic definitely does the trick ... --------------------------------------------------------------------- Home Page: http://I.m.too.dumb.to.hack.html/~kent Kent Williams kent@inav.net (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

ditto have't taken this off since I got it (way before xmyarse). however the new Jacob's Optical Stairway lp is in serious competition for that space in my CD players draw. Get it. jeff
