People are talking about Repeats - I think it repays - dare I say it - multiple listens, but is still slightly disappointing. Does anyone else have the wonderful Being album _Tides_? I only managed to get the October Special Emission, being abroad at a crucial time, but surely someone has the LP? Admittedly the shop in which I bought it had been foxed by the typography on the sleeve, but list members wouldn't be fooled. Would they? Adam

IDMers: this is my first post, my lurking days are behind me... Just picked up the Special Emissions Release (published by sabersongs) "Being" se006 CD. I don't know if it has already been talked about but this stuff is phenomenal. This 2 CD release is a compilation of the highlights from the original vinyl releases (of which I think there were three: se001-se003). This guy is going under the name Dave Being. Beautiful intelligent ambient soundscapes which progress in flowing waves of thought. Intense bass beats, pristine melodies and stuttering rhythms. Track Listing: Being se006 - Selected Transmissions 1. mune 2. mclaren 3. fotts 4. mavebeep pt.3 5. flee 6. ayemooth Being se006 - Point Two 1. foamy 2. ryam 3. bootit 4. toobib 5. aquapan 6. eeshab 7. toyled 8. quickie Anyone else heard this stuff? -dave m moxon@ix.netcom.com http://www.cs.oberlin.edu/~dmoxon

Could anyone who owns this (or the 12"'s) elaborate on this!? Can you offer me a comparison to say...Paul Bishop, or the latest 100% pure? I've once again been provoked to consider hunting this 'Being' down. Thanks! Teep

I haven't heard either of those two you mention. Being a CD buyer I am doomed to miss a good deal of stuff. I can give you a couple of comparisons though. The pacing of the tracks remind me most of Deep Space Network. Start with some ambient washes and build and modulate for a good couple of minutes. Slowly your subconscious begins to catch on to the edges of an implied rhythmic structure, hi hat, gating, until finally, boom, the kick comes in and your moving. The tracks tend to be long and slow building, just the way I like them. The 'sound' of it is different though. The drums have that IDM feel, a metalic, trebly, hissing, clean percussive sound. Sort of halting and robotic but always sitting right on the groove. Lots of distorted analog textures, white noise, chirps and blips which always seem to modulate right in sync... the sound reminds me somewhat of Model 500 but a slower, deeper kind of beat. - - dave m http://www.cs.oberlin.edu/~dmoxon

Yes, and I also think it's superb. The way I would describe his music is that he uses these same drum sounds a lot but with excellent effects and techniques that makes listening to the music quite an experience. Some of the tracks have simple rhythms and jolly melodies but others transform into something quite different. He's made good use of making some things sound like they are beyond the normal possible soundstage. (Roland RSS??) The only annoying thing is that Mr. Dave Being appears to have made poor masters of some of the tracks. Still, the music is just to my taste. More dark stuff please. -Ed

Being is the name Dave Being the Scottish ambient.techno/idm artist goes under. He's got a few releases out on Spacefrogs..German Ambient offshoot to Superstition recs..., and the Emissions limited eps, and the Transmission cd. As far as i know, one cd is compiled from his previous releases each ltd to 500 on Emissions and the rest is new. As for the Tranmissions eps (his previous releases) they were monthly as the names Monthly Transmissions suggest... Nick.

Yes - he's not. He's an Edinburgh artist, and has performed a few times at local clubs. Ewan.

I recently picked up a remix album of Being's "Tides" which I didn't know existed. Being "The Tides Remix Album" (Push 002) 1) Total Confused Being (Dogon) 2) Sular Two (Move D) 3) Tide (Lunasol) 4) Sular One (Insync vs. mysteron) 5) Gonk (Orlando Uoorn) 6) Sular One (Being) 7) Sular Three (Insync vs. mysteron) 8) Being (Ectomorph) 9) Sular Two (Being) Orlando Uoorn and Insync vs mysteron feature the more upbeat remixes, while Ectomorph checks in with a dry 313 reading. The Move D and Being remixes retain the ambient flavor of the originals. Anyone know about this Push label? I'm assuming "Tides" was Push 001, although the CD doesn't say that. being's 'tides' 2x12" is pretty damn cool. i haven't found too much like it, and if anyone else can suggest stuff with this sense of space, (i often compare it to 'polar sequences') i'd like to hear about em'. it's quiet and spooky ambient space hip hop, all centering around the same theme. also, if you can find it, there is a really cool double cd called 'selected transmissions: point two' on the emissions label that is super smooth. came out in 1995, i believe. it's a collection of tracks from the monthly emissions transmission 12"s, i believe there were three of them. if anyone here in the states has any available or can get there hands on any of these, i'd make it worth your while.

it's one thing to give a shout about something they like, or are involved with. it's another to try to create hype. the difference seems to lay in whether you believe in that old yarn: 'there's no such thing as bad press'. on now: built to spill 'there's nothing wrong with love' (up!) cameron ===================================== cameron bowden cameron@imagina.com blacksmith on the anvil in your ear _____________________________________

I have this 2xcd, which came in a clear double-pack plastic with monoc hromatic graphics ala DR style. I'm interested in trading this for Rather Interesting/Atom Heart, Beaumont Hannant, GPR label, Unison/Sahko, or other old interesting things (vinyl preferred) if anyone is looking for this. I don't have the original 12"s for you, Cam, sorry. solenoid
