Hey Folks! Gots a few questions about some new sounds that I hope are just groovin. Anybody heard any of the three new singles by St. Etienne (Dahlia? What the hell's that?)? I'm hoping it's not some sissified guest singer like Jimmy Somerville. Hopefully it's a gal. There's no good to be had when they get a man behind the mic. Even if he does have a voice higher than her. My personal opinion, ov course. Yours may differ. That's OK. There is an Underworld mix on one of them. Just so happens to be the one they didn't have. BTW-How's the Rick Smith mix on that older single with the tiger on the front? There is a new Prodigy single with a Secret Knowledge mix AND a Chemical Brothers mix on it. Aw, yeah. Also, I had heard from a semi-reliable source that the new Mouse on Mars disc is not so much ambient as some smoooooth dub. Is this rumor true? Hmmm? Heard the new Loop Guru. Anybody have some flat 7-UP? You've gotta wonder about a band who actually admits on their album cover that they jam with Chip Davis. Was this one on Windham Hill? I can't remember. obdub: Serenity Dub, 1.1 am is not so serene as sublime. Aw, yeah. Mistress ov ThE BeAt.

a) St. Etienne Daho, _Reserection_ EP, 5 tracks, 19 minutes. Sung by French pop singer Etienne Daho, produced by St. Etienne. Track one serves as an intro, not coincidentally the spoken words are the same as in "He's On the Phone". Other tracks are rerecordings of Saint Etienne tracks: "Filty" becomes "Jungle Pulse", "He's On the Phone" becomes "Accident", also "Paper" and "Hate Your Drug". "Jungle Pulse" and the version of "Hate Your Drug" perhaps improve on the originals. b) St. Etienne Daho, "Jungle Pulse" CD5. 2 tracks. The EP version and a barely-different radio version. c) Saint Etienne, "He's On the Phone" CD5, 4 tracks. Plus 3 non-album tracks. Great stuff. d) Saint Etienne, "He's On the Phone" remixes CD5, 3 tracks. Underworld mix of "Cool Kids of Death". Much like the album version, which he also mixed, except this lasts 14 minutes or somesuch. Plus another OK b-side.

Worth getting the single if you're a fan, but the real standout is the Secret Knowledge mix. --Mark

by new disc do you mean "iaora tahiti" or something else? if the former, then it is unclassifiable - certainly not ambient or dub... they are pretty unique. it's actually closer to german experimentalists of the 70's like can or faust then anything modern... but it's awesome anyway.

by new do you mean "amrita"? i only listened to it in a store but i wasn't blown away. i have everything else of theirs and it's great. if you like dub you must RUN out and get "the third chamber" btw, the artwork for the domestic version of "duniya" is terrible - lame cheezy rave-o-fractal graphics. the import's cover is much cooler, a sort of tribal woodcut thingie. -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://www.cyborganic.com/bass-kittens/

bitch! Biochip C & Freddy Fresh -los amigos en acid [analog #19] Clear Green vinyl. Biochip C's 3 tracks are my favorite from him since the Kaori single. There's a peculiar happy feel to all three of his tracks, but the first is mad acid, the second is sample centered and extra quirky, and the last is faster[still only ~155] and a nice mixture between the previously mentioned mad acid and quirk. Freddy Fresh's side is good too, deeper sounding and without the quirks and madness- more of a house kinda feel. Muey Bueno! And the best part is the message on the label to look for Amigos en Electro on Anodyne soon...whoopeeee! Depth Charge - queen of the scorpion 10" [Depth Charge] Perfect. Title track has lotsa those wicked kung fu movie samples [.."you must place the ring on a mirror and render it assunder with the golden sword, then throw the sword into a fire.."], and is absolutely perfect hip-hop techno...deep metallic synth, buzzy lead, bongo beats, and saxaphone pauses. The B is very laid back stoney hip-hop with dramatic spooky overtones [perfect again], followed by a bunch of "bonus beats" from this same song ...nice beats! perfect record :D J

If they're not, they ought to be.
