Just for fun I've compiled a quiz for IDM'ers Mostly it's pretty easy with a few obscurities mixed in. But to make it trickier to get full marks I will award marks for proper info on each question. Eg If I say "Who released a compilation of singles with only one unreleased track, which is an alternative version of another track on the LP" Then you get marks for Aphex Twin, Classics LP, and Digeridoo (Live in Corwall). But not the cat no., release date, OK trainspotters? All are IDM or somewhere near, that includes some techno, trip hop, jungle/d&b, ambient stuff etc. A. Samples - who used the following: 1. The beatles "hard days night" 2. A little child says "I'm sad. And unhappy" 3. "Laughing by mum" 4. Zapp's "More bounce to the ounce" 5. Zapp's "It Doesn't really matter" 6. A track by the Bar Kays (and re-used the title?) B. Track & Release Titles 1. Which track on Aphex's "Classics" had had 2 other spellings? 2. Who included words for the male and female genitalia on their LP title and artist id? Who released: 3. "Stupid Wanker" 4. "Just a fuckin' idiot" 5. "Five" 6. "Viper" 7. "Cortina" 8. "Lee Perry" 9. "Sergio Mendez" a. a type of Shampoo C. Releases: 1. Pete Namlook finally released "Summer" in 95. Which season came first? 2. Who's album was released under a name incorporating a sports equipment manufacturer? 3. What EP was originally on red vinyl only, and was finally released on CD as an accompaniment to a full length 4. Which US techno pioneer released his debut LP 5. Which UK techno supergroup failed (again) to release their 2nd LP 6. What was released on single sided 7" limited to 1000 as part of a set, then made available on a mini-album CD? D. Who's artwork used: 1. Images which George Lucas might (did?) object to? 2. A self portrait and lots of horrible scribbling? 3. A polystyrene sleeve? 4. A compilation LP on quad vinyl in Red, Yellow, Green and Blue? (OK so the last one isn't really artwork, per se.) Tie break :-) Pronounce "Autechre" OR spell Mike Paradinas' main alias in ASCII. The highest score wins a mixtape. Any answers which are not my expected responses will gather points if verified to a suitable degree of certainty. (a novel touch that!) Have fun and enjoy Christmas - I'm outta here right now... Right, at last here's the answers and result you've all (?) been waiting for. I was rather disappointed by the level of response, to the extent that I'm not going to let on how few people responded; however, it was quite close at the top in the end.

Well, a tricky one which even foxed me in the end. I had the answer as FSOL - ISDN, but needed to identify the track. One respondent gave the answer: Beck - Beercan (Mellow Gold LP) which is correct, but even less 1995 than the FSOL album. And I can't find it on the FSOL album now, so apologies.

Juan Atkins - Model 500 - Deep Space (other techno debut albums nominated were rejected on the basis of the use of the word "pioneer" which in the context of US techno can only apply imo to Juan, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson.) NB I don't count his old "Classics" as a debut album either, it was a compilation of older releases

Interference - Live at Love Parade 94 And the winner? well, I suppose appropriately enough, a certain... Alan M Parry. Well done matey. And a close second to Rob McEwen so I think I'll do him a mixtape too... and special commendation to Aaron Michelson for spelling Mu-ziq with a real greek mu, from his Amiga, which my PC understood correctly!
