Various Artists-Interference:Live At Love Parade '94 Interference Records, Berlin IF 001 LP Limited Editon Gatefold Quadrupule Vinyl Pack (Yellow, Blue, Green & Red Vinyl) TRACKLISTING: Mixmaster Morris-(intro) Thomas Fehlmann-'banda'(I.A.O.O.L) Air Liquide-'this is not a mindtrip' Higher Intelligence Agency-'whirligig' Panasonic-'sahkotin' Deep Space Network-'earth interlog' Hertsi-'ohitus' Plastikman-'gak'(remix) Euphorhythm-'song of karma' Pete Namlook-'subharmonic interference' Voov-'inter fusion' Source Allstars-'jam' Pyromania-'magic bufo' Ebi-'ebi curry' Sun Electric-'northern lights # 5' ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let me say that this is the most important review of '95 for me, as this compilation is a surprise for me, as well as a lot of other people, and a milestone for underground music. This is the first time that a quad. pack compilation of live ambient/IDM/experimental material on 4 different colors of vinyl has ever been released. Not only that, the is the first time that Berlin's annual LOVE PARADE gathering has been captured (on vinyl) during it's 4 year existence. I am pleased & delighted to review this one, and i'm also cross posting this to Mixmaster Morris, in hopes he can shed a little more light on it for us, not only on the internet, but in the trade magazines as well, as there hasn't been any press about the album, or any reviews. First off, Mixmaster Morris introduces us to the Interference Festival, going on about the type of music being presented(Intelligent Techno, Ambient & Experimental are mentioned), then we jump into some warm atmospheric ambient with Thomas Fehlmann, with 'banda'. Smooth sounds, and just plain good! 'earth interlog', for me, is a refreshing change from the normal DSN tracks in that it actually has a nice clubby rhythm to it! I'm still trippin' off of 'ten waves'!!! I'd probably use this in a IDM set, cutting it into two parts, though, as well as 'inter fusion' from Voov. Same type of "intelligent" sounds, not too clubby, but not really ambient, either, despite the track time(about 12 minutes for each track). 'subharmonic interference' is really good, with a computer emulatoright out of the Kraftwerk-"COMPUTER WORLD" era, then shifts to some really intellectual ambience. 'the song of karma' with its monotone rhythms/melodies, "listenable headtrance" would be the phrase i'm looking for with this track. I was expecting some '92 rave fartiness, thoough. 'ohitus' is extreme minimalism, with vinyl grooves hardly noticeable. You can hear some percussion, but you have to listen pretty hard! Reminds me of the experimental stuff from Sahko. My absolute favorite would have to be 'ebi curry', with its ethnic, almost "goa" like sounds! I love it! I wish I was at the L.P. when this was recorded. The rhythm repeats itself throughout the track, and I could do all kinds of weird things with it during my goatrance sets. Air Liqide crop up again with another acid-trance track, 'this is not a mind trip'(this is a body journey), no 303 cruncher, as usually expected from them, but more of a NEPHOLOGY sound. Gentle trance, and a nice female voice. Is it Mary Applegate? Who knows... 'sahkotin' is more experimental ambient stuff, and again has that paranoic edge to it, I mentioned this type of ambient with a review of EXTREME POSSIBILITIES. The HIA boys score big again with 'whirligig', very IDM, their usually "quirky" sounds, but where is that BIIIIGGGG bassline i'm so used to? 'jam' is what it says it is. Definitely to get the "intellitechno" heads grooving. 'gak'(remix), for the purpose of this album works to big effect, but again, this phrase has to come into play, "why fix something that's not broken?" 'gak' as many of you remember was the real percussive, and weird ambient track from PLASTICITY(US), and SHEET ONE(UK), that had the sample "on the edge..." at the end of the track. Well, Mr. Hawtin adds more harder drums over the otherwise excellent original track. It still works though either way, but you can't go wrong with the original. As I mentioned over the summer, I paid $38 for the album(which is pretty shitty considering the fact that there aren't any pictures on the gatefold cover, or any inserts. This price would have been justified with a little artwork, and some info on the L.P., but no such luck. Just don't spend more than $38 on this album, you'd be better off getting a mix of the tracks for half the price! 10/10(Vital Album) Derek Jordan
