i picked up the autechre 12' for "anvil vapre" a while ago. its excellent of course and due to its age i won't go on. however as i was listening to it rather loudly the other day it occurred to me that such distortion at really high levels may actually be dangerous for loud speakers. For instance when crver came out with the sonic hologram generator, which produced a spatial effect using pulse high frequency distortion, it was deemed distructive. anyone with any opinions about the safety of mu-ziq, aphex, autechre etc songs which use siuch extreme sounds? -- Mark Bowen mb@gettins.bche.uic.edu

The LFO 12" for "We are back" on Tommy Boy came with a warning about low bass frequencies causing damage to speakers, and I think the album came with the same warning, can't remember. Well, not really idm, but Jesus Jones had a warning on their second album "doubt" that playing at loud volumes could damage your audio equipment. I'm not sure whether it was a joke or not. Rob.

I ordered the LFO cd when someone posted on rec.music.misc that his woofers split down the middle as he was playing a promo copy or something. This seemed like an old reference to the stickers on all the Miami Bass era 12"s that came out in the late 80's. For instance, I have a Dynamix II tape that says something like "Warning! This recording contains frequencies as low as 10Hz and we cannot be held responisible for the consequences!" or something silly like that. Btw, 10Hz is so low that the human ear tends to seperate the wave into "click-thump" sounds instead of a low "tone" sound anyway... technically you can't hear anything below 20Hz (as i'm sure everyone on this list knows) but at a high enough volume you can sure as hell feel them. especially in your chest. the high end "click thump" sounds actually come from the wave front of the low frequencies. it has also been found that humans can "detect" frequencies above 20kHz, which accounts for a lot of the recent interest in higher (above 48kHz) sampling rates. ***************************************************************** "What is an intellectual? We designed a book for a health insurance company several years back which was sprinkled with various medical factoids. One of them said that the normal, healthy ear of a small child was sensitive to frequencies of up to (if I remember correctly) 40kHz! However, this degraded pretty quickly down to the normal 20kHz. I'll try to dig up the exact figure next week. No wonder kids are so bugged out.
