reviewed [and then eaten! yum!] : #Word Up- human beatbox 12" #Sem- phox 12" #Red Planet 6 2*12" #Insider- enter the electra world [world 1] 12" #Insider- enter the electra world [world 2] 12" #Darwin Chamber- destination 12" #Juan Atkins- magic tracks 12" #Third Electric- urstoff 12" #Charlatans UK v. Chem Bros 12" #Emmanuel Top- Fusion 12" #Air Liquide- Red CD #Air Liquide- Red and Black e.p. 2*10" #my cookies- v. your cookies 2" radii #Word Up- Human Beatbox [R&S] the good tracks are on side A. First track "human beatbox" has of course, a human beatbox sample..pretty damn good too! not the most creative drum programming underneath it, but it's still a nice hip hop beatbox number with nice tribal drums..second track "Ain't it funky" is great. Hip Hop not trip hop :P...wicked good samples, mostly public enemy. Really, really good.. bass-y.. gangsta-ish..great scratch samples...and it's pretty fast...The b-side is bad. I only listened to it once but it was really boring, the sounds just didnt hold my attention... #Sem- phox [electron] eeeeevil! wheee! breaky electro with dark growling synth lines, spooky strings, and lots of reverb....it's great. A....good for scaring my kitties :) #Red Planet 6 practically perfect!"Ghost Dancer" is bluesy, "medicine man" has nice tribal drums that shift channels, "windwalker" is a space disco of fun! wheee!! all the tracks are great, high in detroit intelligence but not boring either...plenty plenty good for dancing. The only track that has worn thin on me is "Ghost Dancer"...it just goes on and on....i wish it had been 4 or five minutes shorter and they had smooshed another track on. still gets an A tho. :) Insider- enter the electra world [world 1] [bonzai records] Insider- enter the electra world [world 2] [bonzai records] Both of these records are fantastic. The overall sound lies somewhere between hard techno and hardcore. These would sound sooooooooooo good in an auditorium or an arena; there's a lot of reverb on dem kicks. Darkness drips from every beat, and some tracks ignite something inside me that makes my heart lurch and make me wanna dance like a fool. :) I think i'd pick world 2 over world one, better use of samples and spOOooOOOooOOky atmosphere in such songs as "God" and the extra-hard, though more ambient "Blue (takes me away)". Darwin Chamber- destination 12" [bassex records] A-side is ok, but it's nothing at all memorable or inspired...the b-side however, the DJ Trance remix, is much better. The kicks are reverbed and hard. I'd bring this to the arena too, but it's nowhere near the level of the Insider tracks. Juan Atkins- magic tracks [white label..] yayayayy!! wicked good! opening track by "Scan 7" reminds me of cool 80's synth lines, like corey hart's "sunglasses at night" [or whatever the real name is :P] but updated lots, technoey. ! Drexciya's track is growly and burbly and mean and fast and ferocious. Juan Atkins' infinity tracks are perfect..Blah blah blah. if you never got this get it....8 great tracks...A+... Third Electric- Urstoff [electrecord] I don't like the title cut much...maybe it'll grow on me. It's got a deeep synth bass line, sorta like 80's electro, but i miss the drums, and the high, tinkly piano-y melody gets on my nerves. the first cut on the other side tho, "slime slurps city" is great..weird space whistles, beeps, a chugging little melody, occasional flanged noises, and a nice electro beat...yummmmmmmmmy:):):):). The second track "schwebebahn" isn't as good but it's still very nice. More beeps [different beeps!], echoey ambient noodles, an occasional scream, nice subtle hi hat, and a warm subtle electro beat underneath it all. #Charlatans UK- vs. Chem Bros. [beggars banquet] Is it just me or don't these mixes sound more than remarkably like the chem bros mix of Sabres' "towtruck"? it hit me write away...But regardless, nice use of vocal sounds. Kinda typical chemical bros beats i guess, tho they're quite good. I can kinda see the mbm comparisons on nine acre dust.,...tho mbm are much much much better...still a fun record. #Emmanuel Top- fusion [triangle records] thundery kicks, swimmy, trancey, nice semi-ravey main synth lines... very nice. two tracks are kinda samey, but they are GOOD :) #Air Liquide- Red [Sm:)e] #Air Liquide- red and black e.p. 2*10" [Sm:)e] Fantastic! only loser is "if there was no gravity" which is REALLY annoying...i never really minded applegate much before but...oh well. i still don't, just that track i guess.. "der laufer" is a perfect chunk of techno with really neat syncopated chopped up voice samples running constantly throughout the song and nice acid. "tanz der lemminge ii(dj hell and tom remix)[hey, who's tom?]" is nice and minimal and very much like a lot of DJ Hell's own stuff. repetitive but nice and interesting. "psychocandies ii" is a hip-hop breaky perfect track, with a great little bassline. "theme from robot wars", remixed by vapourspace is full of nice use of flange and turns into a haunting, spooky, beautiful mix of the original. Finishes out with nice hip hop, breaks, and a track that struck me as similar to orbital at first "hal's favorite". The two ten inches have seven tracks, all of which are on _Red_, except for two which are from _Black_. "auroral belt (remixed by soulslinger)" is heavy with tribal drums, some kinda weird vocal sample[ "dance" ?], lil' acidy dabs, and near the end almost gamelan sounding percussion gets added. And it has the same kick pattern as "this is not a mindtrip(2nd live mix)"... boom boom boomboomboom. so it's pretty dancey :).Very Nice. "time code #3" is spacey wonderful ambient; beeps, quiet little acid burblings, echoey noises, nice fades, subtle kicks that come and go.......Very nice too. :):):):) I look forward to hearing _black_... #My Cookies- vs. your cookies [the oven] my cookies were chewy, but didn't have enough chips. Your cookies were moist and chewy, but were aerodynamically feeble. Side 2 of your third cookie is beautiful. ronny, bobby, ricky, and mike, i love the girl who cares who you like! j :):)
