IDM Reviews: 24 Nov 95 John Beltram: Earth & Nightfall CD R & S 95072 cd blue world / pluvial interlude / synaptic transmission sub-surface/ earth & nightfall / mutualism / the dawn / anticipation nitrie / fragile interlude / aquatic / vienna 50 mins 4 secs of elegant techno. The key word is melodic, melodic, Melodic... This is slow, warm music...lush and well-orchestrated. The ultimate in couch-potato-techno, but you can dance intracranially. Several of the pieces mix gracefully into one another. Lots of superimposed ocean sounds. Acoustic guitar even. More sort of ambient house variations on the detroit theme. 10 of 10 on my music-o-meter. (Why isn't some of this beautiful music released domestically in the US?) back to the club... British Dub Funk: Volume One 12" A Collection from Funky Xen Records Xen 004-LP BDF: Music From The Street / Therapy: Heaven Must Be Like This / System Dub:88 Beat Slow Dub / Compound X: The Love of Science / AJ Beat Bass: Always Something / Passmore: A Bad Groove / G. Foundation: Up Tempo Jam / The Next Chapter: Our Way Through Time Trip hop (if I may use that term) with plenty of soul, DUB, groove, and bleepiness. *Ultrafunky* almost housey, except slower and deeper. Plenty of wacky distorted beats. Jazzy in places. 40 mins worth. For this type of stuff (whatever it is): 9 of 10. I hope these reviews are not too other-listy. Sometimes I think IDM is music that is otherwise unclassifiable :-) More to come. Anyone see EBN and Banco de Gaia recently? They are here in New Orleans Sat night. American "head honchos" of these US labels can't get their big heads around this 'Intelligent Dance Music', 'Abstract Electronica', or 'Electronic Listening Music' scene, and often miss the point of being able to "sit down and listen" to music!(to quote The Diceman from AI) But we know the score...Who the hell needs 'em! Off wit de hed I say! Derek ps. I know this reply is about 2.5 months late, but it needed to be said...
