Here's a mini-review i wrote regarding the November 1st (1999) Baretta release. I haven't seen too many post's about Sprout, so i thought i'd shed some light on a cdr-label producing some of the finest beats for electronic heads to digest. Check the website for more details, including mp3 downloads, and purchasing information: www.hydrant-records.com/about_sprout.html Baretta 'Kicking the Horse' cdr-ep [Sprout] November 1st, 1999. http://www.hydrant-records.com/Baretta.page.html Tracks: ~ Kicking The Horse Pt.1 ~ ~ Newsbreaker ~ ~ Peg Leg Bates ~ ~ Kicking The Horse Pt.2 ~ Baretta's - 'Kicking The Horse EP', one of the latest releases on Sprout Recordings steers left from the crop of American (experimental) electronics, and moves into a field of decadent melodies, instrumental beats, and subtle jazz elements tied to a darker component of mystery. "Peg Leg Bates" gravitates around layer's of constructed beats working in overtime, a bass-throbbing pulse glued to a flute'ish melody, and an atmosphere of eerie voices strung above a wall of sound. An impressive workout of strange bits and bytes. The title track is broken into two distinct parts, "Kicking The Horse Pt.1" and "Kicking The Horse Pt. 2." Each incorporates a live sounding arrangement of drums with tweaked frequencies and an array of calm ambience unlike anything i've heard. With rather short track times, "Kicking The Horse Pt.2" seems to levitate a notch above Part 1's more ~radio friendly~ attitude. "Newsbreaker" fuses mysterious jazz elements with traditional breaks that decompose towards the end. Imagine a mid-80's movie scene where two kid's race to the ice-cream truck with their new BMX bikes, yelling and laughing at each-other all the way there. Fun, mysterious, and fast at the same time.. "Newsbreaker" brings that picture to mind. Overall, Baretta's latest EP introduces an instrumental sound that melts into thick sheets of electronic funk. Talk about kicking the horse, Baretta gives the listener a swift kick to the brain! No buts about it!
