Joost De Lyser of Surreal Sound Magazine has just faxed us this message from Submerge in Detroit. An exact transcription follows. ************************************************* Attn manufacturers, distributors, shippers retailers, customers, fans of underground music. We are currently facing a situation here in Detroit. Submerge is about to be right field in a new baseball stadium! We are located in one of the more rundown areas of Detroit - The Cass Corridor. Due to our cheap rent and unique location we and our customers have come to love our special spot (not to mention it was one of the few places we could afford). 2030 as it is called is also the home of UR, Metroplex, Red Planet, Eddie Fowlkes, Juan Atkins and members of Parliament-Funkadelic. Developers from outside of the city have negotiated with city officials a deal in which our neighborhood chillingly called AREA 1 is slated for eminate destruction to clear the way for the new stadium which is scheduled to break ground in May 1996. Buildings are being razed as we speak! Its winter and many of these abandoned buildings are the only shelter available for our neighborhoods many homeless people. Being very pro-Detroit we always hoped and knew that blighted areas such as ours would eventually come back which is one of the reasons we stayed, but progress must come in a way that is fair to everyone. Hopefully with your support we can get the city and the developers to see that there is more here than the decayed buildings, drugs and crime. Hopefully they also see a neighborhood full of proud Vietnam vets too proud to accept handouts, perhaps they will see people who no matter how down on their luck still are able to share their food with someone less fortunate, perhaps they will see small business owners who refused the exodus to the safety and comfort of the suburbs and remained loyal to the city. Hopefully the city and the developers will see that shelters need to be built and business kept in or close to their original locations. We at Submerge face and ironic problem - due to most of our hometown radio stations inability to play our records (even though the rest of the world does!!) this music and its affiliated artists producers and record labels although some of which are world famous mean absolutely nothing to our pre-programmed audiences here in Detroit and I am sure this will include Detroits city council. The only major press coverage our music ever got here was highly negative and associated with teen drug use at warehouse partys. This was very unfair press especially to the people built and survive from this music. I am hoping that anyone who appreciates what Detroit underground music has done for this world and what submerge is doing to keep the Spirit of truly independent Detroit record labels alive could write a brief 1pg. or less letter and fax it to the #1+313+963+0213 please include your return address and also please mention the need for shelters as the homeless have no voice! We need these faxes or letters by 11-27-95 for our meeting with City Counsel.
