as i was sitting at my desk doing a chemistry lab report, i was thinking to myself: "how could this list be more involving?" i ultimately came to the conclusion that perhaps, as a sort of group effort, we could have some sort of mp3 creation competition. the way it would work is that we'd initially have a group of people who want to get together and have a friendly competition in which every one would submit a vocal, drum, bass, and two additional samples of their choice. each participant would then upload the mp3 samples to a kind ftp host-dude-guy. after three months, the finished product would be due. the song can only be made of the samples provided by the other participants as a regulation. we can call it the "a priori" competition, which means essentially, from cause to effect. i'm well aware that the phrase stems from logical reasoning but it's catchy enough to sound impressive =). is this a feasible idea? i kinda borrowed from the in/flux mixoff competition, but the idea is there. feedback is welcome. if this sort of thing has been attempted before with disastrous results, you must forgive my ignorance as i have only been here for so long. curiously waiting the unknown, shaun --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I would _love_ to do this. So you're saying that everyone submits a few samples and then someone would put them all together into a song? A group of songs? That would be _killer_. Let's hear from everyone that's interested in this! If we got a decent sizeable base of samples then we could get several of the musicians on the list to do mixes!

yeah--check out the (now mythical) in/flux mixoff 1 pages (alluded to in the original messages) for an idea on how it works: http://listen.to/mixoff1/ (none of the actual sample/finished mixes links work anymore--but i can get anyone interested copies of the final mixes) there was a mixoff 2 and a mixoff 3--but i don't have the links for them right now. anyway----i'd love to see the idm list do a mixoff, i'd expect defintely interesting results :) -michael http://www.underworld.net/ http://slippy.underworld.net/

2000-01-27 07:02Rishi SaezThat would be killer to get a CD pressed with the mixes. Only 3 samples per person again?

I'd be happy to contribute. I have some pretty challenging samples that I can't figure out what to do with.
