What it is....
********************************************************************
RealAudio is one of a new breed of software that allows web users
to listen to sound over the web in real time. Before the advent of
RealAudio, web users had to spend hours downloading huge files to
hear a few minutes of sound from the web. Now, thanks to compression
ratios of up to 20 to 1, real time sound can be heard a few seconds
after the click of the mouse.
There is however, a drawback to compression.
The algorithms used to achieve these high compression ratios are
destructive to the sound that is encoded, so much so, that the
compression-distortion creates a beautiful, fractured sound making
compression software systems into a new form of musical instrument.
Immediately after trying RealAudio, we thought of writing
music specifically for the RealAudio player. This piece of music is
carefully designed so that it will not survive the
compression/decompression cycle. When this piece arrives at your
speakers via the web, it will be utterly destroyed/mutilated as it
is performed by the player.
Data on the web travels in packets, which may sometimes get lost or
arrive out of order. RealAudio tries to fix this in real time by
guessing the content of lost packets, and so, each person listening
to this 'Music for RealAudio' piece will recieve a very different
performance.
The slower your modem/internet connection, the better the result
will be.
Make sure that you have the 'Losss Correction' box checked
in the 'Options' dialog, so that the RealAudio player interpolates
any missing data.
