After throwing this on again the other night, I realized that I've never seen a review or mention of this excellent debut on IDM. PhtHalocYaNinE is some kid from L.A. named Dimitri. The record came out on Joe and Al's imprint Plug Research about a year ago.. The most immediate comparisons I'd make are to old Aphex, but without the whole masculin sounds thing goin' on.. The drums are incredibly wimpy sine wave and white noise based blurps, conveying that strange funkiness of Kraftwerk that few have seemed to grasp.. There's what could be called a "j*ngle" track, but the beats and the melodies are so subtle, that it retains that art-synth aesthetic.. One of the things that makes me smile when hearing this record is that he seems to be the first person to sample a BUaRP track (either that or we have some pretty similar programming habits on the TG).. This is one of those records that stands distinctly outside the realm of techno, in that while Warp, Rephlex, and co. have gained a reputation as being the indie-rock of techno, this slab is right up there with the likes of Tortoise in terms of free-form experimenting.. Also look out for a band called Trans-Am coming soon on Thrill Jockey.. I've heard a track they did for a comp. called Cognitive Mapping II, which was basically all distorted drum machine parts.. They've been getting alot of hype from John McEntire (Bastro, Tortoise, Gastr Del Sol, Sea and Cake) and he's generally a reliable source.. If you don't already have it, hunt down the Duophonic (Stereolab's label) Tortoise release.. The b-side is a masterpiece.. I also want to hype the Plug Research 12" comp. that's finally out, no thanks to me.. It's got a Spatula Freak, O.S.T., R.E.A.L.M.S., and Hodge cut to boot.. BTW, am I the only one who thought the last two reflective 12"s were great? Later, Jamie

Sounds hot. Plug stuff is quite rare in the UK though - I've only ever seen one 12" (unless I'm looking in the wrong places...). With a Spatula track on it, maybe some kind soul will pick it up for a UK license or something...

Which ones? _South of Market_ I thought had one amazing track on it (the side with one track) - it's intricate and clever but doesn't get overly introverted and lose its way. The other two lose this structure a bit I thought, and end up being a bit beardy. It's quite a fresh sound though - that bass is warm, wet and sticky, just how I like it. || [CiM] || s.walley@uea.ac.uk || http://www.sys.uea.ac.uk/~u9323899/

As hot as a Winter's night at McMurdo Sound. A Mike Paradinas-by-the-numbers track, and the rest of it strikes me as, well, aimless noodling by people who think the "process" of making music is more important than actually paying attention to whether what comes out of the *speakers* is any good or not. The emperor has no clothes. (Sorry, but I'm in a grouchy mood this morning. I'll try harder next time ...) - Greg

After reading this, as an occasional auctioneer ( remember the SKAM001 auction ? ) I though I'd add: The best way *I've* done auctions, though certainly not the best and always open to suggestions, is something like this: You solicit an auction to a list, such as IDM. You post the items, privately, off list so as not to clog up an already clogged list ( HINT HINT!!!) Has'nt Aran kindly asked us to stop posting lists? You set an auction open and closing day. Like, opens on the 5th, closes on the 12th or something like that. You also set up a day when *all* bids will be posted to all *bidders*. This ideally is once in a bidding period. So, if it's a one week auction, post an update once. For two weeks, twice. This is not a rule, just a preference. You receive bids. Then on a given day that you have disclosed, you email *all* bidders *all* bids. Basically, if you did'nt bid, you don't get bothered with receivigng unwanted emails. After doing this, you cite the item, the highest bid but not the identity of the bidder. However, you may choose to cite a list of bidders email names. This way, to make sure that the auctioneer is not creating a false bid ascension as Mark Stevens has mentioned below...it does happen. This way, any bidder can email any other fellow bidder like, "bob@internet.com" and say, "hey bob@internet.com, is it possible that *anyone* in this auction would have bid $10,000 for Richard James pubic hair? Is this auctionerer for real?" A key closure to an auction is to make sure that on the last day of an auction, you post the high bids on two or three occasions over a day's time, with the bidders names to *all* of the participating bidders. This way everyone gets a chance at winning a bid and also the auctioneer has made his rep public and accountable. One problem with this is that there are several time zones to deal with should your auction be worldwide. I have'nt figured this out. It's unfortunate that if I post high bids on a last day, someone in Melbourne has to read his/her email at 3:30 am to match a bid. Auctions are not perfect endeavors, but I have tried to do them fairly and always solicit ideas to improve them. Bad auctioneers also get bad reps real quick so if someone is dishonest, you can be sure their name will be spread around like poo poo. Tip: beware of an auctioneers name that reads like 10-20 other email names. I think anyone who maintains several identities in the internet has something to hide, like a bad rep. I'm sure we all have stories to tell. Also, never bid to an auctioneer with a hotmail account! Surely you know why. Good luck, buyers and sellers! Thanks, Peter np: Neu tribute ( some great material here, unexpected...) nxt: Hecker IT0161975 ( a-fucking mazing....anyone heard the negative track yet? Nothing wrong in that, of course, but some of these auctions can sound a bit dodgy -- how do you know you're genuinely bidding against someone else, or just responding to the auctioneer's attempts to artificially bump up the price? I know one bloke who tried to auction something in this group earlier this year. I emailed him a few bids, but he kept responding with something like, "Oh, someone else has just bumped up the offer by a tenner!" It started getting ridiculous, so I pulled out. A few weeks later, the bloke was trying to sell the same thing again.

Any details? Anyone? Music (mix tapes / cds) is about the only thing that gets me through a day of work anymore... its been constantly over 100 outside and I work in room size fridges... needless to say, after spending 6-10 hours in there @ 35 degrees and walking out to the 100+ degrees, I need something real good to inspire me... speaking of which =) recent new material for me: v/a highways over gardens (carpet bomb) - what can i say... these guys release great stuff... very disappointed that the microstudio wasn't anything new, but still great stuff on a whole... the jazzy track by kundalini (?) absolutely blew me away! phthalocyanine 'navy warshp;' (phthalo) - had heard alot of people talking but finially forced myself to get it after james@vvm told me that it was well worth my while checking out... wish i'd listened to lance m all that while back =) unexpected noise level (not talking volume here) makes this gem... phthalocyanine 'virdian ep' (phthalo) - quick listen as it just came today... not as out there and 'experimental' as navy warship, sounded alot more beat oriented... very nice though... like i said, only one listen musical nature 'forgotten textures' (demo) - holy shite! got this for as material for a noise / ambient comp i'm putting together... *really* good stuff... an excellent blend of idm - ambient - spacy material... i'm probably going to rant and rave and post an url and info in a separate post on this one =) jowonio productions 'compression' (jowonio prod) - got the tape of this a while back and fell in love with it... received the cd-r release of this a few weeks back and have been far too lazy to make mention of it... great blend of electronic beats, dark and weird textures and spoken word. hard to pin down and describe but highly recommended if you're open to something a little different... also, jowonio prod were on vvm002 (pffr) and the recent map one comp (among other releases) got tunes of great new stuff, but above is whats getting far too much play! ^brap@sonic.net^ [icq: 12645306] http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ [blackdog][v/vm][jamesbernarddiscography]...etc etc etc sfwd.dyn.ml.org [occasional web.irc.ftp.etc]]] chris g. 1547 boston court #7, santa rosa, ca 95405

Actually this one is a re-release of phthalo's first record on plug research originally releaesed back in 1996. So that is why the style is a little different than that heard on his more recent releases like the Navy Warships cd or The Logan ep. In my opinion, The Viridian ep sounds a lot like modern day Autechre but done almost two years ago! It shows you how long Phthalo has been doing good stuff. I tend to think Of Dimitri as a one-man genre. While it doesn't necessarily clash with IDM, I don't reallyu see him fitting neatly into that category. Speaking purely about the music, you'd be better off comparing him to free jazz. When I listen to him perform, I go through a process. I've discussed this with others, and we all seem to agree. You start out kinda laughing, thinking that "this is totally obnoxious, but it's wicked". And then five minutes later, you're completely entranced by his performance, following every note with complete obedience. You just get lost in his compositions (so don't listen to phthalocyanine in the car, you'll cause an accident). And everytime I see him perform, I'm suprised that the same thing happens, even though it does every time. Which reminds me... EVERYONE SHOULD OWN "LORAINE"! It's a fucking *spectacular* collection. I dig almost every track, even the ones that aren't really IDM (i.e. a good chunk of the first disc). The second disc is just a mind-blower, one bomb after another, from all of your Isophlux/Plug Research/Schematic/etc. favorites. Seriously. Get this record! Greg

Yeah, it takes a few listenings to get into it, I know Christopher Robin used to try and get me into it a few times before I actually started to dig it myself. I know this is getting carried out, but this was really funny! Daniel's mom came up to me to say good bye and was like, "I think I've had enough". Laughed my ass off.. but you have to give respect to someone's mom who's willing to support their kid and show up to such a performance (rumour has it that phthalocyanine's mom actually comes to his gigs:) Supportive parents in IDM. That's after I go to all the trouble of soliciting IDM help for an ambient sleep-tape! Oh, and they also think the Village People are pretty hot, after seeing a Disco Party special on VH1. There is NO hope, people ... I * np: Nonplace Urban Field

Its that, ' hey I'm old enough to listen to whatever I damn well want ' thing =) My girlfriend's kid used to love skinny puppy and that lot, and got into alot of afx stuff... now she'll get into some dance techno material, but she'd be happier listening to Leanne Rimes, Elvis or so other thing that we'll debate back and forth about ('no really, david toop and v/vm really kick elvis' ass... elvis is dead'... 'no, vvm suck, chris, and elvis is the king... don't make me eye to eye you!' hehehehe... if you argue with this kid enough she freak out and jump on you and try and touch her eye with your eye... I've seen it happen many times and its damn freaky =) anyways... sorry for the somewhat pointless post brap@sonic.net[icq: 12645306] http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ sfwd prod | noisesoundnoise chris g. 1547 boston court #7, santa rosa, ca 95405

I've never met a kid (meaning between 4 and 12) that didn't like Bootsy Collins. Your kids obviously could use some funk. :) When I used to work at Corporate Records, err, Tower Records I listened to a lot of Soukouss (I worked in the jazz/world section) and little kids would always dance around and sing along to it while their parents were picking out the latest in "jazz product" music (like Hiroshima and Kenny G and other equally disgusting stuff.) It was pretty cool to watch those kids though (and listen to them try to sing along with these african guys singing in whatever language they use for songs in Zaire) Nana Vasconcelos (brazillian precussion weirdo, later fusion dork, now back to weirdo) was also a big hit with the short crowd. You're in Africa, so I doubt you'll have any trouble getting Kanda Bongo Man (or whoever) records (the one remixed by autechre is pretty cool, by the way.) .Bil. IAMaCOPIER

Ah, ALL of us could use some funk :-) I'm obviously not trying to stop them from enjoying anything I consider less than perfect - they are free to make up their own minds. Ah, whatever. I certainly never liked music my parents found pleasant (and still don't)! The very fact that they're listening to the stuff I mentioned earlier implies that it's available in our house .... ah, the skeletons ... I * np : Indigo (one) : Tribal chants and rhythms

I'm with ya completely on this one dan. The first time i saw dimitri play live was a few weeks ago at the lorraine party. it was seriously fucking ridiculous. it was during his set that one of my friends who had tagged along asked to be taken home....i guess she was scared. :)

heh, i bought navy warship outside of a nice little fish taco joint in costa mesa, ca. a month or so ago, and i listened to it on 45 minute ride home. it is dangerous...ask the honda that i almost flattened. :) - brian - www.rain.org/~audio
