Any words on the new Spring Heel Jack album, "There are strings"? It's turning out to be an impulse buy that I'm not regretting. A lot of sweeping strings and light piano work rolled together with the odd female vocal and/or tasteful sample. Second slab is a bit spotty, but overall a good chill jungle record. Rang

Stumbled across a four-song disc at Blockbuster tonight of Inner City's "Ahnonghay", with mixes by Dave Clarke and Carl Craig. Apparently, Inner City is Kevin Saunderson (?). Anyway, the Dave Clarke mix is blistering Detroit, and the original isn't bad either. Any info on Saunderson would be appreciated - I scanned the archives and didn't find anything, but the name sounds familiar. Maybe Legion of Green Men? You're right about theat Dave Clarke Mix. I gave it a very enthusiastic mini-review some time ago. :)

Men? Kevin Saunderson is one of the "originators" of Detroit techno, coming just behind Juan Atkins and Derrick May in the reckoning. His early work as "Reese" etc. is highly respected and can be found on many of the early Detroit Compilations, and of course some of the more recent retrospectives. He worked with both Juan and Derrick at times, and set up KMS records (that's his initials), which is still going, but over the last few years has generally moved to a house direction - that was all started by Inner City's "Big Fun", a classic song on a pure Detroit track which became a huge hit. The follow up "Good Life" was even bigger and the tracks spawned a million imitators. I think maybe now you know who I am talking about? If you check the 313 pages which can be reached from Hyperreal, you can find discogs for KMS and the other Detroit labels. Don't know too much about Spring Heel Jack, but I think he/they used to be in an indie band. I've got their album 'There Are Strings', and they released a single, 'Lee Perry' not long ago as well. The album is superb IMO, a very live, musical and less electronic take on drum 'n' bass... See ya Tom Churchill E-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk Electronic DJ and musician
