Orbital - Times Fly (Internal) ------------------------------ Nothing much needs to be said about this. As with all Orbital material, buy immediately. 'Times Fly (Slow)' is an awesome trip-hop/jungle/techno hybrid, done as only the Hartnolls know how. 'Times Fly (Fast)' is similar, but with more emphasis on the drum 'n' bass elements. 'Sad But New' is a stunning reworking - achingly beautiful guitar following the dreamy vocals to great effect. 'Tranquiliser' is more straightforward - tinkling loops and sequences over electronic pads and rhythms, again totally distinctive. Xpansions - This Is How Music Should Sound (Precious Materials 6) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry to keep on about the drum 'n' bass, but this has to be one of the most beautiful tunes of the year, hot on the heels of Precious Material's earlier release, 'A Touch of Jazz'. What a label! Gorgeous strings and talented piano solos over the coolest, tightest drums. The kind of amazing track that you wish would go on forever... Clubbed To Death remixes (Mo'Wax MW037P 10") -------------------------------------------- Wax Doctor focuses on the atmospheric, dreamy pads and melodic loops, at the expense of the drum programming. His simple, overused one-bar loop is overshadowed by Peshay's awesome, tearing cut-up on the flip, which also retains the atmosphere and soundtrack feel. Synchrojack EP (Ferox) ---------------------- The latest release on the Russ Gabriel's hotly-tipped young label. Five tracks of superbly programmed, hard funky techno. The opener 'Cash Machines' is the most obviously floor-aimed cut, and having heard Weatherall drop it last night at 3AM, it certainly does the business. Not too repetitive for home listening, though. The other two notable tracks are the superb Detroit-ish 'The Circle', beautiful melodic techno, and the irresitibly funky, housier, disco cut-up of 'End Of The Road'. Yet another fine British techno release from the new school of producers. Model 500 - The Flow remixes (R&S) ---------------------------------- Only the first 12" reviewed here. This has Atkins' own 'G-Funk mix', which is pretty much as it sounds, a tad commercial for me. Underworld's mix is a typical banging techno track, but nothing very exciting. The best of the three is the Alex Reece mix, where the drum'n'bass man-of-the-moment employs his trademark drum programming, sounding *very* much like 'Pulp Fiction', whilst fragments of the original are chopped up to produce a typical minimal workout. Maybe worth buying for the Reece mix, but overall nothing special. See ya Tom Churchill E-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk Electronic DJ and musician
